And So It Goes...

ครับ หลังจากหมาอัลเซเชียนวีรบุรุษหางจุกตูด หมาบูลด็อกผู้ดุดันไปเลียมือโจร และหมาโกลเด้นปากจู๋เชิญโจรเข้าบ้าน ก็ถึงตาที่หมาพันทางเฝ้าบ้านทั้งหลายต้องออกมาสู้กับโจรอีกครั้ง

... จากเหตุผลดังกล่าวข้างต้น อดีตแกนนำพันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตย เห็นว่า สถานการณ์ดังกล่าวจะทำให้บ้านเมืองเข้าสู่กลียุคอย่างแน่นอน จึงได้มาร่วมประชุมและกำหนดจุดยืนต่อสถานการณ์ดังต่อไปนี้

ประการแรก อดีตแกนนำพันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยได้ตัดสินใจมีมติฟื้นสภาพโครงสร้างการบริหารงานพันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยขึ้นมาอีกครั้งเหมือนดังเดิม เพื่อพร้อมดำเนินการต่อสู้กับพฤติการณ์ของรัฐบาลนายสมัครที่จะทำงานรับใช้ระบอบทักษิณในทุกรูปแบบ

ประการที่สอง พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยเรียกร้องให้ คณะกรรมการการเลือกตั้งที่ไม่ได้อยู่ภายใต้ระบอบทักษิณ แสดงความกล้าหาญ ยุติต้นเหตุวิกฤติของชาติด้วยการสะสางลงโทษผู้กระทำความผิดกฎหมายเลือกตั้ง และดำเนินการเสนอศาลรัฐธรรมนูญเพื่อยุบพรรคการเมืองที่เป็นนอมินีให้กับพรรคการเมืองที่ถูกยุบด้วยคำวินิจฉัยของตุลาการรัฐธรรมนูญโดยเร็ว

ประการที่สาม พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยเรียกร้องให้นายสมัคร สุนทรเวช แสดงความจงรักภักดีต่อชาติ ศาสนา และพระมหากษัตริย์ ด้วยการกระทำ อย่าให้คนไม่ดีมาปกครองบ้านเมือง ยุติบทบาทการกระทำอันเป็นหุ่นเชิดของ พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร และ ประพฤติปฏิบัติเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรีที่เสียสละเพื่อคน 63 ล้านคนอย่างแท้จริง

ประการที่สี่ พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยเรียกร้องให้รัฐบาลนายสมัครทบทวนการโยกย้ายข้าราชการเพื่อแก้มลทินให้กับ พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตรและครอบครัวในกระบวนการยุติธรรม ทั้งนี้ ให้ยุติความพยายามในการแทรกแซงคณะกรรมการตรวจสอบการกระทำที่ก่อให้เกิดความเสียหายแก่รัฐ สำนักงานอัยการสูงสุด สำนักงานป้องกันและปราบปรามการฟอกเงิน และกรมสอบสวนคดีพิเศษ รวมถึงการโยกย้ายตำรวจเพื่อช่วยเหลือคดีความใดๆ ในระบอบทักษิณ

ประการที่ห้า ที่ผ่านมา พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตย ไม่เคยคัดค้านการกลับเข้าประเทศของ พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร หากเข้ามาสู่กระบวนการยุติธรรมที่ไม่ถูกแทรกแซงและเป็นอิสระ แต่เมื่อระบอบทักษิณได้ใช้กระบวนการแทรกแซงและตัดตอนกระบวนการยุติธรรม พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร จึงยังคงเป็นปัญหาของแผ่นดินต่อไป พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยจึงคัดค้านการกลับประเทศไทยของ พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร ในทุกรูปแบบ ตราบใดที่ยังมีความพยายามที่จะครอบงำและแทรกแซงกระบวนการยุติธรรม

ประการที่หก พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยเรียกร้องให้รัฐบาลนายสมัครดำเนินการยุติความกำเริบเสิบสานในการลิดรอน ข่มขู่ คุกคามสิทธิเสรีภาพของสื่อสารมวลชน

ประการที่เจ็ด พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยเรียกร้องให้พี่น้อง ข้าราชการ ทหาร ตำรวจ และประชาชน ที่รักชาติบ้านเมืองมาร่วมกันลุกขึ้นมาเกาะกลุ่มรวมตัวเพื่อเฝ้าระวังพฤติการณ์ของนักการเมืองและข้าราชการในระบอบทักษิณอย่างใกล้ชิด และจัดตั้งขยายงานเตรียมพร้อมกับการต่อสู้กับความเลวร้ายของระบอบทักษิณในทุกรูปแบบ อันรวมถึงการเตรียมความพร้อมเคลื่อนไหวในทุกรูปแบบ เพื่อสร้างสังคมธรรมาภิบาล โดยไม่หวั่นเกรงว่าอะไรจะเกิดขึ้น เมื่อถึงเวลาอันสมควร ซึ่งพันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยจะแจ้งให้ทราบโดยทั่วกันอีกครั้งหนึ่ง

3. ประเทศไทยนั้นจะเป็นประเทศที่เจ๋งมากเมื่อเทียบกับทั้งโลก เพียงถ้าเราสามารถทำให้คนมีอำนาจ เพลาๆในการทำชั่วและเอาเปรียบสังคมได้บ้าง ถ้ากฏหมายพึ่งได้ เราก็มีโอกาสพัฒนา ถ้ากฏหมายพึ่งไม่ได้แล้วสังคมเราจะเป็นสังคมอารยะได้อย่างไร

หวยกับสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ (หรือทำไมผมควรจะหยุดรับรู้ข่าวสารบ้านเมืองไทย)

ถ้าสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์มีจริง* ผมว่าเราสามารถมองการหวังพึ่งสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ว่าคล้ายๆกับการเล่นหวย** ด้วยเหตุผลดังนี้

1. โอกาสที่จะถูกหวยน้อยมาก

2. คนซื้อหวย เพราะไม่มีหนทางจะร่ำรวยแบบอื่น

3. มีเจ้ามือหวยคอยรับผลประโยชน์จากการเล่นหวยของเรา

4. หลายคนบอกว่าเล่นหวยแล้วสนุก หรือดีกว่าอยู่ปล่าวๆ

5. หลายคนมักจะสำคัญตนผิดว่ามีเลขเด็ด หรือมีเคล็ดลับในการทำให้หวยออกให้ถูก

6. หลายคนเล่นหวย เพราะหวังผลเลิศ กะจะรวยโดยไม่ทำงาน

คุณเห็นด้วยไหมว่าการแก้ปัญหาตามเหตุตามผล แทนที่จะไปทำพิธีไสยศาสตร์น่าจะมีโอกาสสำเร็จมากกว่า

*ด้วยหลักฐานที่มีอยู่ในปัจจุบัน ผมว่าไม่มีสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์มาคอยดลบันดาลอะไรให้หรอกครับ บางคนอาจจะบอกว่าถ้าไม่เคยเห็นอะไรไม่ได้หมายความว่าสิ่งนั้นไม่มี พูดแบบนั้นก็ถูก แต่ว่าผมก็ไม่เคยเห็นช้างบินได้เหมือนกัน ผมก็เลยดิดว่าผมควรดำเนินชีวิตไปด้วยสมมุติฐานว่าไม่มีช้างบินได้ดีกว่า เนื่องจากน่าจะใกล้สภาพความจริงของธรรมชาติจักรวาลมากกว่า ไว้ถ้ามีหลักฐานว่าช้างบินได้จริงๆอย่างแน่ชัดค่อยปรับความเชื่อ อีกอย่างก็คือการที่บอกว่าอะไรบางอย่าง (X) มีจริงๆนั้น ควรหาหลักฐานมาสนับสนุนว่า X มีจริงๆ ไม่ใช่บอกว่าถ้าหาหลักฐานว่า X ไม่มีไม่ได้ แล้วแสดงว่า X คงมีตัวตน

บางคนบอกว่ามีการดลบันดาลจริงๆ ซึ่งคำถามที่เราต้องถามก็คือรู้ได้อย่างไรว่าเป็นการดลบันดาล และไม่ใช่ random chance หลักฐานเป็นอย่างไร คุณภาพของหลักฐานเป็นอย่างไร เราจะแบ่งแยกอย่างไรระหว่างผู้วิเศษกับนักมายากล

**สมมุติว่ามีสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์จริงๆ เราก็ควรประมาณผลกระทบ และความน่าจะเป็นที่สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์จะดลบันดาลอะไรให้ ถ้าพบว่าโอกาสน้อยกว่าถูกหวย เราก็ไม่ควรไปหวังพึ่งอยู่ดี เพราะเราไม่อาจฝากความหวังว่าจะล้างหนี้สินด้วยเงินรางวัลจากหวยได้ อีกอย่างเราต้องระวังผู้วิเศษที่ได้ผลประโยชน์จากความเชื่อของเราด้วย

Good Article, Bad Example

Naomi Wolf wrote a good How-To article on how to turn a democracy into a fascist state. However, her example of the 2006 Thailand Coup as an example of a process of turning Thailand into a fascist state is wrong. It's closer to the truth to view the coup as turning a proto-fascist government of Thaksin Shinawatra into a proto-democratic state. In this respect, the U.S.A. is in even more trouble than Thailand since there's nobody to stop the process of fascism. It might be wise to heed the advice of this retired soldier.

I wrote my voluminous impression of the coup in the past. After a year, I have to say that I'm quite disappointed with the result. There are so many things that could have been done by the people who seized power to prepare Thailand for a stable democracy. Instead, it's quite likely that Thailand will go into more vicious cycles of failed democracy after this coming election since many of the same politicians who bought votes will likely be in the parliament again.

The U.S. Empire Is Crumbling

Although it made me very sad, I have to agree with the Game Over: Thirty-Six Sure-Fire Signs That Your Empire Is Crumbling article by David Michael Green. The U.S. is damaging itself tremendously by persuing the wasteful and murderous policies.

I spent most of my adolescent and young-adult life in the U.S. and remember it as a great place with great people. I have many wonderful friends from the U.S. It's amazing what a mess the country has become in a few short years. The situation is a dramatic demonstation of what "Democracy" with an easily fooled (or outright stupid) population, immoral-and-overly-profit-oriented press, and some election cheating can do to a country, even a great one such as the U.S.

I hope the new Congress will stop and reverse this decline in time and won't allow the Invasion of Iran to happen.

Meanwhile, I am continued to be frustrated by the lack of result in cleaning up Thailand's mess left by the exiled-but-still-very-rich election stealer. I hope the effort shows some effectiveness soon, or my country will be setback again by another election by a stupid/easily-fooled population, immoral-and-overly-profit-oriented press, and election stealing before the year's end.

But The Hearts of Men Are Easily Corrupted

ผมอ่านข่าวเหล่านี้:

และยังเห็นนักเล่าข่าวที่ไม่มีทั้งกึ๋นและจริยธรรม ยังอ้าปากพะงาบๆตามทีวีช่องต่างๆ กรอกหูประชาชนดั่งพวกเราโง่กว่ากระบืออยู่ทุกวัน

แล้วผมก็คิดถึงคำพูดของ Galadriel ที่พูดในหนัง The Lord of the Rings ที่ผมนั่งดูกับธีธัชเมื่อวันก่อน (ผมลอกมาจากเว็บที่แฟนหนังจับภาพจาก DVD และจด subtitleไว้อย่างยอดเยี่ยม อย่าลืมกดเข้าไปดู) ผมกำลังสงสัยว่าผู้นำผู้มีอำนาจของประเทศไทยหลายๆคนอาจอยากจะเลียนแบบ Isildur ถ้าเป็นอย่างนั้นจริง เหล่า Hobbits ก็เตรียมเหนื่อยอีกได้

ผมหวังว่าผู้นำประเทศของเราจะไม่ทำพลาดง่ายๆเหมือน Isildur

Galadriel: "But the power of the Ring could not be undone."

[Sauron strides onto the battlefield, towering over both Elves and Men. Sauron wields a mace, hitting a group of warriors and sending them flying across the field. He repeats it with another fell swoop. The leader of Men raises his sword to strike Sauron, but Sauron parries the blow and flings him against the rock, crushing him to death. Horrified, one of the Men rushes to the fallen warrior.]

Galadriel: "It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the King, took up his father's sword."

[Isildur grasps the hilt of the sword, but Sauron stomps it down, shattering it. Sauron, with the Ring on his finger, reaches down towards Isildur. Isildur lets out a battle cry and strikes Sauron's hand with the shard of the sword, slicing the finger that bears the One Ring. Sauron lets out a cry as the Ring is separated from him. Sauron implodes, sending a shock wave throughout the battlefield, knocking the warring troops off their feet. His armor falls unto the ground, his body vaporized.]

Galadriel: "Sauron, the enemy of the free-peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated."

Galadriel: "The Ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever. But the hearts of Men are easily corrupted. And the Ring of Power has a will of its own."

[Isildur, proudly wearing the Ring of Power on a chain round his neck, returns from the battle. On the way, his troop is attacked by a band of Orcs. In the fighting, Isildur grabs the chain and snaps it, putting the Ring on his finger, and immediately vanishes. Isildur dives into the river. But the Ring slips off his finger and falls down to the river bottom.]

Galadriel: "It betrayed Isildur…"

[Isildur, visible again, is spotted by Orcs and shot by arrows.]

Galadriel: "…to his death."

[His body floats down the river.]

Galadriel: "And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost."

A Parable Starring Titus & Tatia, Or A Computer Nerd's Guide To Thailand 2006 Coup

Titus got his new operating system installed on his computer. The previous OS was crufty so he upgraded it to the latest version. He had high hope for this OS because it was designed by a team of famous computer scientists and engineers.

Titus went looking for an application software to run on his new OS to make his life easier and more productive. He read off the descriptions of a bunch of programs. A program called TRT caught his attention. It promised to do all the amazing things while consuming little or no resource. Of course, the claim did not make any sense since getting everything for nothing was impossible. However, Titus believed the claim because the CEO of the TRT company was a billionnaire with a Ph.D., and Titus believed that rich people don't lie and people with Ph.D. know what they are doing.

In the beginning, TRT program seemed to be doing its job. The interface was really flashy and nice. Everything looked wonderful. The online updates always told Titus of even more, even flashier features in the coming months. Titus was quite happy. There were small glitches here and there, but Titus thought they were random occurrences that just happened. Titus kept running the TRT program.

Unbeknown to Titus, TRT surreptitiously installed a rootkit, many viruses, a key-logger, and other malwares that consumed more and more resources while doing no useful work for Titus. The rootkit was particularly pernicious since it subverted and modified the OS into an essentially a proprietary TRT OS that did secret things beneficial to the TRT company such as siphoning financial and other personal information to the TRT company so that they could spend Titus's current money and borrowed even more money under Titus's name and used it to buy nice stuff for the TRT executives. The modified OS also lost the ability to detect and defend against any future TRT malwares.

Titus began to notice more and more glitches. His life became harder. He attributed this to his bad luck and "how the world normally works." Tatia also observed the strange behaviors of Titus's computer. She had seen these symptoms before on many types and brands of computers. They were results of rogue programs disguised as beneficial ones. Many computers were destroyed by such programs. Tatia told Titus that the computer was infected by the TRT program and she tried to remove it using various software means but failed. Meanwhile, the TRT program, sensing detection, accelerated its stealing of Titus's resources and told Titus that Tatia was destroying the computer. The TRT program also started selling off Titus's properties to highest bidders. Titus didn't know whether to believe Tatia or the TRT program, besides he could not do anything anyway since he did not know how to remove the TRT program. Besides, which other program he could replace TRT with? They all looked drab and boring and he suspected they would install another set of malwares anyway.

All these events were observed by the local computer technician. His job was to make sure that the computer under his responsibility kept running in a reasonable manner so that there would still be a computer at the end of the day. He stepped in, backed up the necessary data, then formatted the harddisk (bloodlessly, I might add), getting rid of the TRT program with its associated rootkit and malwares. He was in the process of installing a better and more secure OS. More importantly, Titus should have learned from this experience about how to protect his computer properly from malicious programs like the TRT program in the future.

Titus was waiting for a better OS to be set up. The computer technician told him it would take a bit of time but Titus would have the full control of his computer again soon. Titus and Tatia are waiting to see how it goes.

Local computer technician = CDR (The Council for Democratic Reform - the people who staged the coup) + cooperating governmental staff.

P.S. I'm quite amused by this news of the US condemning the bloodless coup. This is from the country that sent in troops to topple another country's government, killing tens of thousands of civilians, killing thousands of soldiers on both sides and did it all using fake reasons (such as the invisible 9/11 tie or WMD, etc.) Besides, these decisions were made by a leader who won in elections with growing evidences of foul plays using Diebold machines. Also, the biggest trade partner of the largest non-democratic country in the world should not be condemning other countries about an interim solution that should lead to a more democratic society in the future.

My View On The Coup

I'm not worried about the coup. If necessary, people will rally against a coup that stays too long in power. This has been true for the past 50 years. I was very worried about Thaksin's abuse of power. Below is what I emailed my English speaking friends to calm them down a little bit:

Dear Friends,

You might be alarmed by the coup in Thailand last night. I can assure you that it was very peaceful and is a good thing for Thailand. Informed people of Thailand, numbered in tens of millions, have been trying to get Thaksin to step down for the past two years with peaceful means. Starting from the beginning of this year, there were at least 40 big rallies that 100,000 to 500,000 people joined to ask Thaksin to resign to no avail. I really hated sitting in the hot or wet streets or sleeping over in the park but I was prepared to go again when the new rally was scheduled today. (The rally is now canceled since it's not necessary anymore. I am very relieved! )

Five years ago, Thaksin was a telecom operator, already a billionaire. He won the elections with populist policy reminiscent of Juan Peron of Argentina and Ferdinand Marcos of the Phillippines. He overpromises most of the things and always comes up with new flashy projects to distract people while he and his cronies rob Thailand.

During the time that he's a prime mister, he:

1. Cheats in elections. Ballot stuffing, intimidation, killing opposition (under war-on-drug pretext, see below), buying votes are standard practices of his administration. He always proclaims that he is the democratically elected PM, but "election thief" would be a more accurate description.

2. Changes various laws to thwart the check-and-balance procedures so he can do things with impunity by putting his own people in the various independent auditing agencies that are supposed to watch corruptions.

3. Dominates the boards of various telecom, energy, logistics state enterprises with his men and makes those enterprises that compete with his business much weaker so that he could either take them over or destroy them.

4. Signs various FTAs (free trade agreements) with various countries without disclosing the terms in the parliament (so that the terms can be reviewed by the public) before the deals are done. It seems that for all the FTAs, he has the signing countries buy his regional telecome services, especially the service involving IPStar (a broadband geosynchronous satellite he owned.)

5. Tries to setup various special economic zones with laws that greatly benefit his and his friends' businesses, effectively create sub-countries within Thailand.

6. Allows rampant human right violations to happen. In the south, where a large fraction of the population is Muslim, there are a lot of police-state intimidation actions and killings of civilians. Under his "war-on-drug" pretext, thousands of people were killed without due process. No meaningful investigation into their deaths was performed. A prominent civil-right lawyer was kidnapped and disappeared when he raised this human right issue.

7. Practices extreme cronyism. His friends and relatives are put into various positions to control and benefit from all business.

8. Hides his assets against the laws. Most likely to do insider trading and manipulate the stock market.

9. Distorts the free operation of news media. News organizations and people who reported unfavorable news about him or his business got sued for billions of baht. News organizations who reported his propagandas got lavished with lots and lots of ads money from him and his cronies. Free broadcast TVs were controlled by his administration.

I could go on and on, but I think any one of the above should disqualify him from his office already.

If you are still with me this far, don't worry about us in Thailand. Normal people are going on with their lives. Crooks are scrambling to get away from courts and jails. Many civilian actually took pictures of themselves with the tanks and soldiers. I didn't see any soldiers or weapons along the way from my house to my office (12 km stretch.) I observed in the newspapers, TVs, and mobile phone clips that the soldiers didn't load their rifles with magazines yet. I think this coup is one of the most mellow coups ever in the history!

Thaksin Virus Is Gone!!!

It's a very good news to hear that Thaksin is no longer the Prime Minister of Thailand.

Some of my friends from the US might think that having a military coup to topple Thaksin is a step backward for Thailand's democracy. However, I would like to point out that Thaksin's massive abuse of power, destruction of check-and-balance mechanisms, control of media propagandas, and election frauds, have already damaged Thailand's democracy to the ground. Besides, the US has a bigger problem with Bush's reign.

Now, the people of Thailand should be stronger and more self-reliant in fighting corruption and building a better society. We emerged from Thaksin crisis a stronger people :-)

It's great that the virus didn't overwhelm the immune system.
