หนังสือแนะนำ: Predictably Irrational และ พฤติกรรมพยากรณ์

Predictably Irrational ที่เขียนโดย Dan Ariely หรือฉบับแปลเป็นภาษาไทยที่เรียกว่า พฤติกรรมพยากรณ์ โดยคุณพูนลาภ อุทัยเลิศอรุณ เป็นหนังสือที่น่าสนใจและอ่านสนุกมากครับ เนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับวิธีตัดสินใจที่ไม่ค่อยมีเหตุผลของคนทั่วๆไป ที่แพร่หลายจนเป็นเรื่องปกติในชีวิตประจำวันของเราครับ นักการตลาดสามารถใช้ความไม่มีเหตุผลของเราเพื่อเพิ่มยอดขายหรือสร้างราคาและตลาดใหม่ๆเต็มไปหมดครับ

อาจารย์ป่านให้หนังสือ Predictably Irrational ผมนานแล้วครับ แต่พึ่งเห็นฉบับแปลภาษาไทยเลยมาพึ่งมาแนะนำ

This is a marvelous book. Steven Landsburg attempted to answer some interesting questions* with ideas from mathematics, economics, and physics! If you have a chance, you should take a look at it--it should provide you with new perspectives on many things, even if you disagree with it.

Randomness Education For Future Generations

Over the past few years, one of my back-burner projects is learning how to make an automated financial security trader. My trader/economist friend first proposed the idea to me 4 years ago, so I started educating myself about this ever since. I was aware of the demise of Long Term Capital Management, a hedge fund with Nobel laureates on its board, so my gut feeling was that we don't know much about the nature of risks and that the first priority in any automated trading should be: don't get wiped out.  I read quite a few papers but I suspect that the authors might be the "often wrong, never in doubt" types (or at least "often wrong, often in doubt but I won't tell you" type.)

By chance, I stumbled upon two excellent books by Nassim Nicholas Taleb called Fooled by Randomness and The Black Swan.  These books argue that human often impose patterns on to something essentially random and we don't have a good sense about the impact of rare events.  You can see the fall of LTCM and the current financial meltdown as manifestations of the ideas in these books.  I will make sure that my children become exposed to these ideas when they learn about probability and randomness.

There are fields, such as physics, biology, and chemistry, where experts are significantly better than non-expert at predicting how reality behaves.  Then there are fields, such as financial forecasting, government, and alternative medicines, where "experts" don't know much, if at all, more than non-experts.  So, a lot of times, when you think an expert is bullshitting, you are probably right. 

6. I notice, while teaching my students about Bayesian inference, that it's hard or impossible to get true probability distributions for most interesting questions.

Before You Kill The Next Ant,...

...you should see what ants are capable of in this paper. As a general rule, I try not to destroy anything that I cannot replace. I fail often, but I am trying my best.

I became interested in ant behaviors when I read "Journey to the Ants" back in 1995. What I found most amazing was that some ants use tools in their warfare.

Some people solve optimization problems by emulating what ants do. Their finding is called ant colony optimization. I think it's very clever.

Immunize Yourself Against Business How-To B.S.

Before you read your next business how-to book, you should really check out "The Halo Effect: ... and the Eight Other Business Delusions That Deceive Managers." to immunize yourself from plausible, but false, claims in those books. You should be better armed to spot bad reasoning contained in books that might otherwise waste your time.

I'm ashamed to admit that in my youth, I read a lot of business how-to books. Over a few years, I realized that the claims in the books were quite sloppily supported by evidence. I then stopped reading most of them. A few years back, I heard of a book called "Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets" and the title got me interested enough to read it and found it to be very instructive. When the author of Fooled by Randomness mentioned The Halo Effect, I checked it out also.

I Also Am A Fortune Teller (หมอดูฟันธง)*

I predict that Robert Axelrod will win a Nobel Prize for this work.

Well, he should anyway.

Now before you doubt my ability as a fortune teller, my Nobel prediction is currently 100% correct! In the late 1980's/early 1990's, I told my friends that Ahmed Zewail would surely win a Nobel prize in the future after listening to his talk about femtochemistry.

Well, one data point is probably a fluke anyway.

If you have not read "The Evolution of Cooperation", you should really take a look.

*Of course, fortune tellers seem to know the future by doing these:

1. Predict dramatic things.
2. Predict often.
3. Ignore wrong predictions.
4. Focus exclusively on correct predictions.
5. Master cold reading.

The correct question we should ask ourselves is "Does the fortune teller performs better than chance?" not "Does the fortune teller predicts anything correctly?" I'm quite sure that all fortune tellers are fraud. However, if any of them is real, there are many Nobel prizes awaiting those who can deduce the nature of time from those real fortune teller's performance.

Superstition Is Not Limited To Human!

In 1948, there was an experiment by B.F. Skinner that showed that pigeons appeared to exhibit superstitious behaviors.

I think the result might be applicable to why human perform rituals, pray, bribe karma wheel, buy lotteries, etc. I also wonder whether animals have their religious thoughts too.


I like to collect these animal examples because, based on what we learn from animal and human behaviors, I believe that biology created human morals and religions through evolution of societal units and it's up to the us, not supernatural mechanisms, to make sure that bad deeds got punished and good deeds got rewarded. I don't believe that human require special treatment from nature in terms of mechanisms that shaped us.

• Moral Minds: How Nature Designed Our Universal Sense of Right and Wrong

• The Evolution of Cooperation

In the last book, bacteria show cooperative behaviors that might be examples of what we would call moral behaviors. That book, along with The Blind Watchmaker started my education in evolution.

หนังสือ "X-Ray คนไทย 360 องศา" ครับ เขียนโดยคุณ พงษ์ ผาวิจิตร

เป็นข้อสังเกตว่าลักษณะของคนไทยเป็นอย่างไร และควรจะแก้นิสัยอะไรให้ดีขึ้น เขียนได้แสบๆ คันๆ แต่มีสาระดีครับ อ่านไปก็หัวเราะหึหึไป ผมอ่านแล้วก็สำรวจตัวเองและพบว่ามีนิสัยไม่ดีเยอะเหมือนกัน ถ้าไม่ได้อ่านก็คงไม่ได้เห็นนิสัยเสียของตนเองชัดๆ
