Today I Learned About Prince Rupert's Drops

Here's the link from Wikipedia.

The drops are "...are a glass curiosity created by dripping hot molten glass into cold water. The glass cools into a tadpole-shaped droplet with a long, thin, tail. The water rapidly cools the molten glass on the outside of the drop, while the inner portion of the drop remains significantly hotter. When the glass on the inside eventually cools, it contracts inside the already-solid outer part. This contraction sets up very large compressive stresses on the exterior, while the core of the drop is in a state of tensile stress. It can be said to be a kind of tempered glass. The very high residual stress within the drop gives rise to unusual qualities, such as the ability to withstand a blow from a hammer on the bulbous end without breaking, while the drops will disintegrate explosively if the tail end is even slightly damaged."

If you are teaching math to kids or if you find math interesting, here are a few websites that you might enjoy.

The Virtual Math Tutor site contains solved math problems for high school and college levels.

Math Magic contains a bunch of mathematical puzzles that you might enjoy. The archive goes back to 1998.

Project Euler contains puzzles for math and programming. The intended audience would "...include students for whom the basic curriculum is not feeding their hunger to learn, adults whose background was not primarily mathematics but had an interest in things mathematical, and professionals who want to keep their problem solving and mathematics on the edge."

A Minor Problem Buying Software Through App Store

I saw Apple's new App Store on my Mac's dock and wanted to try it. I wanted to buy Angry Birds for $4.99. After clicking the Buy button, App Store kept saying that it could not process my request. I tried doing the same thing three times over two days in case the problem was temporary but I failed every time. Each time, the App Store asked me to review my Apple ID information and I noticed finally that the rule for acceptable password seemed to be different from the last time I created my password. So, I tried logging in my Apple ID account and changed my password to satisfy the new password verification rule. After that, App Store let me buy software with no problem.

So, to summarize, Apple apparently changed their password verification rule so that a valid password created three years ago does not pass the new verification rule (with a new set of letters, numbers, symbols, etc.) and stopped my from using the App Store.

Want To Be A Good Theoretical Physicist?

Gerard 't Hooft (a winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in physics) has written a guide on how someone can self-study to be a good theoretical physicist. I think it's a good guide, suitable for someone serious and determined:

"...It should be possible, these days, to collect all knowledge you need from the internet. Problem then is, there is so much junk on the internet. Is it possible to weed out those very rare pages that may really be of use? I know exactly what should be taught to the beginning student. The names and topics of the absolutely necessary lecture courses are easy to list, and this is what I have done below. It is my intention to search on the web where the really useful papers and books are, preferably downloadable as well. This way, the costs of becoming a theoretical physicist should not exceed much the price of a computer with internet connection, a printer, and lots of paper and pens. Unfortunately, I still have to recommend to buy text books as well, but it is harder to advise you here; perhaps in a future site. Let's first limit ourselves to the absolute minimum. The subjects listed below must be studied. Any omission will be punished: failure. Do get me right: you don't have to believe anything you read on faith - check it. Try alternative approaches, as many as you can. You will discover, time and again, that really what those guys did indeed was the smartest thing possible. Amazing. the best of the texts come with exercises. Do them. find out that you can understand everything. ตอนทารกหญิงที่ต่อมาชื่อธัชธีญาเกิดนั้น (เกิดวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม 2548) ผมและภรรยายังไม่ทราบว่าจะตั้งชื่อว่าอะไร พวกเราอยากได้ชื่อไทยที่ออกเสียงและเขียนเป็นภาษาอังกฤษได้สั้นๆเหมือนชื่อพี่ชายของเธอ (ที่ชื่อ ธีธัช--Titus) อาแอนดรูว์ (Andrew Chantra) จากอเมริกาได้เสนอชื่อ Tatia ซึ่งสั้นดีและอ่านได้ว่า ทา-ทิ-ยะ ผมและภรรยาก็เลยเขียนเป็นธัชธีญาในภาษาไทยเสียเลย แต่อย่าถามผมเรื่องความหมายของคำนี้เลยครับ มีคนบอกว่าธีธัชแปลว่าผู้มีปัญญาเป็นธงชัย (แต่ผมก็ไม่เคยไปสืบดูว่าจริงหรือเปล่า เพราะผมและภรรยาตั้งชื่อโดยภรรยาเสนอชื่อภาษาไทยมา 5 ชื่อและผมเลือกชื่อที่สามารถเขียนง่ายๆในภาษาอังกฤษด้วย) ดังนั้นผมก็เลยโมเมว่าธัชธีญาก็มีความหมายเหมือนกันแต่เป็นผู้หญิงเพราะมี -ญา ต่อท้าย

วันนี้ไปร้านหนังสือ SE-ED แล้วเจอหนังสือเล่มนี้ครับ

ชื่อว่า"บางสิ่งที่น่าเสียดาย ไอน์สไตน์ไม่เคยพบแต่พระพุทธเจ้าเห็น" ครับ วูบแรกผมก็คิดเลยว่า เอาอีกแล้วเหรอ ไอ้หนังสือประเภท ไอน์สไตน์ปนกับพระพุทธเจ้าเนี่ย ซึ่งทุกๆเล่มที่ผมดูผมก็จะเปิดดูส่วนที่เกี่ยวกับวิทยาศาสตร์ และจะพบว่าค่อนข้างมั่วทุกเล่ม ดังนั้นผมจึงคิดว่าส่วนอื่นๆที่ผมไม่ได้อ่านก็น่าจะค่อนข้างมั่วด้วย ผมจึงไม่ให้น้ำหนักกับหนังสือพวกนี้นัก

สำหรับเล่มนี้ ปรากฏว่าจากการสุ่มอ่านส่วนที่เกี่ยวกับวิทยาศาสตร์แล้ว เล่มนี้มั่วมหากาฬเลยครับ ไม่รู้ว่าคนเขียนมันกล้าเขียนออกมาได้อย่างไร ผมอ่านแล้วก็เซ็งว่าถ้าคนไม่เคยศึกษากระบวนการทางวิทยาศาสตร์มาอ่านเข้า จะสมองเสียถาวรหรือเปล่า ผมถึงรู้สึกว่าต้องมาเขียนเตือนไว้ที่นี้ เผื่อท่านได้ไปประสบพบพานเข้า จะได้ระวังตัวไว้ ถ้าจะอ่านก็ต้องมีวิจารณญาณดีๆ ท่องคาถาสามข้อนี้ไว้ครับ:

ไลเคนเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตที่เกิดจากความร่วมมือของสาหร่ายและราครับ มีหลากหลายชนิด แต่ละชนิดก็จะมีลักษณะและสีต่างๆกันไป พบมากตามผิวต้นไม้และหินในบริเวณที่มีมลพิษน้อย รายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมอยู่ที่นี่ครับ

TestDisk & PhotoRec: Rescuing Deleted Files On Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, And Other OS's

TestDisk is a free (open source) software that let you recovered deleted partitions and files on most major operating systems easily. I've used it successfully on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X on various occasions. So, if you unintentionally delete your files you might want to try it.

For deleted files on digital camera memory, TestDisk has a companion program called PhotoRec that recovers pictures and videos from the various media such hard disks, DVD, CD, memory cards, and thumb drives. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use it.

Finding Links You Shared On Facebook

I've shared a lot of links on Facebook and occasionally people would ask me about an old link that I've already forgotten. I don't know of a way to easily find those links but last week someone introduced me to trunk.ly, a search engine for the links I shared on Facebook and Twitter. It has done a good job of listing and searching the links that I've recently shared. So, if you want to keep track of the links you share, you might find trunk.ly useful.

iFixit.com Is Cool

I've found iFixit to be a useful and entertaining site. It has many repair manuals and disassembly instructions for computers and electronic gadgets.

When I was a kid, I liked to take things apart to look inside and to have a resource like this telling me how to take things apart without breaking them is a godsend.

I've consulted the site when I poked around and upgraded two Macbooks. Before looking at the instructions, I was afraid I might break them but the instructions were very helpful and I could follow them quite easily.

Doing Math Homework With Wolfram Alpha

I wonder how many kids will do their homework by hand if they find out that Wolfram Alpha can do most math homework for them.

For example, going to http://www.wolframalpha.com and type "solve x^2 + y^2 = 1 and x y = 1/2" will give you this page with graphs, symbolic and numerical solutions:

For some problems, Wolfram Alpha can provide step-by-step solution. For example, finding the derivative of 1/cos(x^2) gives the solution and related information. When we click on the "Show steps" link, we get to see this:

Integrals can be done easily. Typing "integrate 1/(1+ 2x + 5x^2)" and clicking "Show steps" gives you this:

Wolfram Alpha can provide step-by-step solutions for many of high school and college math problems I tried; standard math homework that asks the students to "show their work" would be easily done by Wolfram Alpha.

Two Interesting TED Talks

The first talk is by Mechai Viravaidya (มีชัย วีระไวทยะ) or Mr. Condom in Thailand. I think he prevented a lot of problems from happening in Thailand. Thailand could be in a much worse shape right now with 100 million people or so instead of about 67 million people. The talk has an interactive transcript on the right side so you can read the transcript and jump to the video corresponding to any particular place of the talk. The second talk is by the inimitable Hans Rosling on global population growth and how the world will change in the next few decades. (If you don't see the video, go here to see it.)

Dr. Rosling also has many interesting and entertaining talks on TED and at GapMinder.

Kelvin Water Dropper

I was looking around for science demonstration that I can do for kids and found this video of Professor Walter Lewin showing an apparatus called the Kelvin water dropper.

It works by positive feedback of electrical charge separation. Once one bucket is slightly more positive than the other bucket, it will get more and more positive, building up voltage between the buckets. When the voltage is high enough, electrical charges can travel through air, making mini lightnings (sparks.)

A Few Papers To Keep In Mind When Talking About p-Values

The first paper's title is very provoking: Why Most Published Research Findings Are False.

The second one (The Cult of Statistical Significance) is instructive for anyone who thinks about quoting p-values.

The third one is by the late E.T. Jaynes, one of the overlooked great men of science: Confidence Intervals VS Bayesian Intervals.

An Interesting Book: The Big Questions, By Steven E. Landsburg

This is a marvelous book. Steven Landsburg attempted to answer some interesting questions* with ideas from mathematics, economics, and physics! If you have a chance, you should take a look at it--it should provide you with new perspectives on many things, even if you disagree with it.

md5 On Mac OS X ~ md5sum On Linux

{Summary: Mac OS X's md5 command is analogous to Linux's md5sum. openssl can calculate many types of digests for you.}

This entry is a note to myself so that I won't repeat the same mistake again since I have done so at least twice already.

I had to transfer quite a big file from Mac OS X to a Linux server using sFTP. The session was interrupted a few times and I wanted to make sure that the file on the server was not corrupted. So I went ahead to calculate the message digest (MD5) of the file on the server and the original file on the Mac.

I typed md5sum filename on Linux and got the message digest with no problem. When I typed md5sum filename on Mac, the computer said the command was not found. So I googled for "md5sum mac os x" and the links on the first page seemed to say that md5sum should already be on my Mac.

So I typed "man md5sum" and the computer said there was no manual for the command md5sum. I then tried "man md5" and got the manual for the command md5 that would calculate the MD5 message digest just as I needed and I went ahead and used the md5 command.

After I verified that the uploaded file was not corrupted, I realized that I had done these steps before but have forgotten about it all. I looked at the files on the Linux servers and I saw a few big files that I calculated the MD5 message digests when I uploaded them. So, I must have forgotten all about the steps that led me to use md5 before and hence this note.

BTW, MD5 message digest is no longer considered secure enough for serious work and SHA1 or better digests should be used instead. To find SHA1 on Linux, use sha1sum filename. To find SHA1 on a Mac, use "openssl sha1 filename" or "openssl dgst -sha1 filename". To find SHA256 on a Mac, use "openssl dgst -sha256 filename".

If you want to calculate message digests on multiple files inside directories, you can use md5deep which calculate MD5, SHA1, SHA256, and other digests for you.

Remote Control Your Computers, Hassle Free

I Like DealExtreme

I ordered some small rare-earth magnets from DealExtreme last year since it's hard to find them in Thailand. The magnets are strong and cheap and I'm very happy with them and have used them in quite a few scientific demonstrations for young kids.

Recently, I was looking for adapters that will connect my laptop to external screens/projectors so I need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI and a Mini DisplayPort to VGA. In Thailand, Apple sells them for 1,000 baht (about $33) each. I think the price is quite steep so I went to DealExtreme and search for them.
