Ah, What A Sweet Memory!

My first computer, the Atari 400, is one of the top ten computers with the worst keyboards!

I got it when I was 12. The price was 12,000 baht which was a large sum at the time. I went to Hong Kong for the first time with my family and we bought it there. I told my grandpa that it was for education when in fact it had a big library of games. (I even told him about eye-hand coordination while I was commanding a starship in the excellent Star Raiders game.)

The funny thing is, I played games less and less and programmed more and more for the next few years. I learned English out of necessity to understand how to program that computer in BASIC. I made some stupid chasing games and plotted many pretty (in my opinion) curves. On the other hand, those curves must look really bad now with the resolution I used then (320x192) compared to what I have now (1440x900 to 1680x1050.) Very amazing what a 1.79 megahertz CPU and 8 kilobytes of RAM could do.

I didn't even notice that its keyboard was bad.

Dream = Our Private Virtual Reality Training?

According to this article, nightmares are the brain's training to respond to threatening situations in real life. This hypothesis explains my frequent dreaming about fighting monsters in my dreams :-) I think I actually get better at shooting double-taps in real life since I did it hundreds of time in my brain's simulation but very few times in reality because of the high cost of ammunition. In my dreams, I usually get attacked from the side -- that probably means I should look around for monsters waiting to ambush me if I ever go on Zombie hunting.

The ingenious part is the description of how the researchers prevent their mice from dreaming. It's clever and hilarious (to us; to the mice, it is maddening.)

(เรื่องนี้ต่อจาก ทำไมการดูชะตาชีวิตด้วยวันเดือนปีเกิดจึงไม่น่าจะทำได้)

ผมอ่านเนชั่นสุดสัปดาห์ ประจำวันที่ 28 ธันวาคม 2550 ถึงบทความเรื่อง "ระทึก 'เหลือง-แดง' ลุ้นเอกภาพ '5 อรหันต์' ปัจจัยชี้ขาดศึกชิงอำนาจ" ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับการที่ หนึ่งในห้ากรรมการ กกต. ดูเหมือนจะทำงานชักช้า เหมือนใส่เกียร์ว่าง ไม่ทำหน้าที่ของตนให้เต็มที่

ผมเคยได้ยินข่าวลือเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้มานานแล้ว แต่จำชื่อคนใส่เกียร์ว่างไม่ได้ ผมเลยดูรูป กรรมการ กกต. ทั้งห้า แล้วถามตัวเองว่า "ถ้าดูจากหน้า ใครเป็นกังฉินเอ่ย" แล้วผมก็เลือกหน้าไว้หนึ่งหน้า จำชื่อไว้ แล้วอ่านบทความ

ระวังการเลือกตั้งด้วยเครื่องอิเลคทรอนิค e-Voting

ในที่สุดรัฐ Ohio สหรัฐอเมริกาก็ออกมาเปิดเผยผลสอบความ(ไม่)น่าไว้วางใจ ในการลงคะแนนเลือกตั้งด้วยเครื่องอีเลคทรอนิค (e-voting, สรุปอ่านง่ายๆที่นี่)

ผมปักใจเชื่อว่ามีการโกงเลือกตั้งในสหรัฐในปี 2000 และ 2004 เนื่องจากผลคลาดเคลื่อนจากโพลที่มีมาตรฐาน (ผลคลาดเคลื่อนเป็นบวกกับ Republican เสมอในทุกแห่งที่มีความคลาดเคลื่อน นอกจากนี้ยังคลาดเคลื่อนเฉพาะในเขตที่ใช้ e-voting ด้วย, อ้ออีกอย่าง ผมพูดถึงโพลมีมาตรฐานเท่านั้นนะครับ ไม่ใช่โพลไม่มีมาตรฐานเช่นอันนี้ )

ถ้ามีผู้แทนในประเทศไทยมาเสนอ e-voting ผมขอแปลงคำเตือนของ Don Corleone ในหนัง The Godfather มาใช้ว่า "Listen, whoever comes to you with this e-voting meeting he's the traitor. Don't forget that." คนที่จะนำเสนอไม่ Stupid (ไม่รู้ว่า e-voting โกงง่าย) ก็ Evil (กะจะโกงซะเอง) ล่ะครับ

Solving Sudoku Puzzles

I was thinking about writing a program to solve Sudoku puzzles for fun. Before I started writing, I did a quick Google search to see what programs are available. The search turned up many results, the most impressive of which is this essay by Peter Norvig (who co-wrote a famous AI book and is currently the Director of Research at Google)

The full Python source is only about 100 lines and it solves hard Sudoku puzzles very quickly. Therefore, my plan to write the ultimate Sudoku solver is derailed by Dr. Norvig's brilliance

Immunize Yourself Against Business How-To B.S.

Before you read your next business how-to book, you should really check out "The Halo Effect: ... and the Eight Other Business Delusions That Deceive Managers." to immunize yourself from plausible, but false, claims in those books. You should be better armed to spot bad reasoning contained in books that might otherwise waste your time.

I'm ashamed to admit that in my youth, I read a lot of business how-to books. Over a few years, I realized that the claims in the books were quite sloppily supported by evidence. I then stopped reading most of them. A few years back, I heard of a book called "Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets" and the title got me interested enough to read it and found it to be very instructive. When the author of Fooled by Randomness mentioned The Halo Effect, I checked it out also.

Python: Programming Is Fun Again!

My thought exactly.

Any programmer can learn it in an afternoon and be productive in a day. As a bonus, the code is naturally easier to read, so after half a year, I can pick up my own old code again in 10 seconds. And I'm just an average amateur programmer. (Amateur = doing it for love; Professional = doing it for money. Look at the etymology here and here.)

All CS students should at least know about it. I don't understand why introductory programming classes in Thailand are being taught with C, C++, C#, or Java while half the class would copy the other half's homework. No learning happens in half of the brains!

The Secret To Raising Smart Kids

If you are a parent, this Scientific American article is probably one of the most important ones you will read about how to raise your children.

The article summarizes how parents might unintentionally harm their kids by praising them the wrong way.

It seems that tenacity is generally more important than talents. The willingness to learn and fail is necessary for people to develop. In my personal experience of meeting many genuine mathematical and scientific geniuses, this is generally true.

จดหมายที่พลาดรางวัล 0.1 ล้านบาท

ผมส่งจดหมายนี้ไปชิงรางวัลน้ำมัน Caltex เมื่อต้นปีแต่ไม่เคยได้ข่าวอะไรอีกเลย แต่เห็นว่าอาจจะมีประโยชน์กับท่านอื่นๆเลยมาไว้ที่นี่ครับ

ผมประหยัดน้ำมันได้ประมาณ 15% จากการขับระมัดระวังขึ้นครับ ถ้าสนใจการประหยัดมีคนที่ทำวิธีแปลกๆที่ได้ผลยิ่งขึ้นไปอีกครับ

ผมพบว่าน้ำมันของ Caltex กับ Esso วิ่งได้ไกลกว่าอันอื่นครับ ไม่รู้ว่าเป็นเพราะอะไร อาจจะเป็นการเก็บน้ำมันก็ได้ ไม่รู้เหตุผลแน่นอนครับ ยังไงถ้าใครทำการทดลองอื่นๆอีกมาแบ่งปันข้อมูลกันก็ได้นะครับ

สวัสดีครับ

ผมส่งเรื่องราวของผมมาให้พิจารณาครับ ผมได้ทำการทดลองและปรับเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมการขับมาได้สองปีแล้ว

เครื่องรถของผมมีขนาด 2,800 cc และตัวรถก็ค่อนข้างหนัก เมื่อก่อนผมมีนิสัยการขับแบบไม่คำนึงถึงความประหยัดเท่าไรนัก จนกระทั่งเวลาสองปีที่ผ่านมาที่ราคาน้ำมันเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว ผมจึงพยายามเปลี่ยนวิธีขับรถให้เป็นวิธีที่ประหยัดมากขึ้น รวมถึงได้ทดลองใช้น้ำมันยี่ห้อต่างๆที่มีขายอยู่ ผมทำการคำนวณระยะทางเป็นกิโลเมตรต่อน้ำมันหนึ่งลิตรในทุกครั้งที่ผมเติมน้ำมัน ใช้เวลาทดลองอยู่ประมาณ 8 เดือน ผลก็คือผมพบว่ามีความแตกต่างที่วัดได้เมื่อผมปรับปรุงพฤติกรรมการขับของผม หลังจากทำการทดลองเสร็จผมก็ใช้น้ำมันเบนซิน 95 คาลเท็กซ์ +Techron ตั้งแต่นั้นมา

ผมขับรถโดยคำนึงถึงความประหยัดดังนี้ครับ

1. ไม่เร่งเครื่องแรงๆโดยไม่จำเป็น
2. วางแผนชะลอความเร็ว จะได้ไม่ต้องเบรกกระชั้นชิด และไม่ต้องเร่งเครื่องเกินความจำเป็นแล้วก็ต้องรีบหยุด
3. รักษาความเร็วเฉลี่ยไว้ไม่เกิน 90-100 กม/ชม. ผมพบว่าที่ความเร็วระหว่าง 90-140 กม/ชม. การสิ้นเปลืองเชื้อเพลิงจะแปรผันตรงกับความเร็ว เช่นขับรถที่ 120 กม/ชม. จะสิ้นเปลืองกว่าที่ 100 กม/ชม. ประมาณ 20% เมื่อขับถึงจุดหมายเดียวกัน (เพราะ 120 กม/ชม. มากกว่า 100 กม/ชม. อยู่ 20% จึงสิ้นเปลืองกว่าประมาณ 20%)
4. วางแผนเส้นทางเดินทาง และเวลาการเดินทางเพื่อลดการจราจรติดขัด และเวลาที่จอดรถเผาน้ำมันไปเปล่าๆ
5. ใช้น้ำมันเบนซิน 95 คาลเท็กซ์ +Techron หลังจากได้เปรียบเทียบกับน้ำมันยี่ห้อต่างๆแล้ว ผมพบว่าน้ำมันของคาลเท็กซ์ดีกว่าบางยี่ห้ออย่างเห็นได้ชัด (วัดจากจำนวนกิโลเมตรต่อน้ำมันหนึ่งลิตร) รวมถึงเสียงเครื่องยนต์ก็เรียบทำให้น่าเชื่อว่าการทำงานของเครื่องยนต์คงจะทำงานได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ

ผมพบว่าการขับรถโดยคำนึงถึงความประหยัดดังกล่าว ทำให้สามารถประหยัดน้ำมันในการขับทั่วไปจาก 8.2 ± 0.2 กิโลเมตรต่อลิตร กลายเป็น 9.4 ± 0.2 กิโลเมตรต่อลิตร หรือประหยัดได้ประมาณ 15% อย่างง่ายๆเลยทีเดียว ขณะที่เวลาที่ใช้ในการเดินทางก็เท่าเดิม เนื่องจากความเร็วเฉลี่ยเท่าเดิม แต่ประหยัดเงินและทรัพยากรได้ชัดเจน อีกทั้งยังมีความปลอดภัยจากความเร็วที่ไม่สูงเกินไป และไม่ลำบากในการปฏิบัติแต่อย่างใด (ผมตรวจสภาพรถ เครื่องยนต์ และลมยางให้อยู่ในสภาพปกติเสมอ เลยไม่ได้ทดลองเปรียบเทียบการใช้น้ำมันเวลาสภาพรถผิดปกติ)

Yet Another Example In Which Power Corrupts

Here is another cautionary tale of giving power to religions. No matter how noble the teachings sound, when there is a power hierarchy, unscrupulous men will more likely climb to the top and do evil things under "religious" supreme authority. Rational arguments with these religious power-holders are impossible since their religious belief says they are absolutely right and anybody who disagrees is wrong.

The funniest/most ironic sentence in the article for me is "Here is a historical irony: the first Dalai Lama was installed by a Chinese army."

You might ask, what would be an alternative to blindly uncritically following a religion then? I think you can start with Humanism and won't be too wrong. Also, practicing the more reasonable teachings in each religion while ignoring the blatantly stupid ones would be a good guide to life.

1. I don't automatically say a religion is non-sensical. However, to a very high probability, if you use the "and" conjunctive between all teachings in a religion, the result would be false. (Since True and True and True and False = False.) While there are many true/applicable/moral things in each religion, the trick is to separate the true/applicable/moral teachings from non-sensical ones. I think our ability to discern which is which would be enhanced if we subscribe to humanism in the first place.

2. See Buddhism role in my Things to Teach My Children (Version 1.0). Even there, my children and I must have some ability to separate the good parts from the non-sensical parts.

3. You can guess my stance on mixing Buddhism and Constitution in Thailand. The last attempt of such mixing was significantly sponsored by a certain temple known for its exquisite blend of {Buddhism + Greed + Capitalism + Conflicts of Interest + Human Stupidity} that would have benefited greatly from a state-backed religion. Thank goodness there were enough people with clear head in the parliament.

DIY Synthetic Biology

I just found another branch of knowledge that my children should play with when they grow up a bit. They can hack bacteria to do interesting things!*

I think Thailand could have a shot at doing significant work in this field. To start, drop by the Registry of Standard Biological Parts and look through the catalog of what is available. You can start on this page. Maybe we can make bacteria clean up our pollution or collect energy for us or something much more imaginative.

This reminds me of a sci-fi story I read many years ago titled "The Self-Made Man" (or something similar, I'm not sure) where children got genetic-engineering kits as gifts and the protagonist, starting as an enforcement agent/assassin of a GMO-producing corporation, created an empire based on genetic-engineered inventions. I think I have a good chance to see that sci-fi story becomes reality.

Or we will become extinct because of some stupid mistake.

Steel Poetry*: One Pilot's Description of His Plane

I found this essay about the SR-71 Blackbird very poetic.

The SR-71 Blackbird is one of my all-time favorite airplanes. (Others are A-10 Warthog (look at it's 30mm Gatling gun!), Messerschmitt Bf 109, P-51 Mustang, and F-4 Phantom. I spent a lot of time when I was between 10 to 16 poring over various weapon systems.)

Note that in the article, the plane flew at more than Mach 3 (or three times the speed of sound.) For comparison, handgun bullets travel around Mach 1. Rifle bullets travel around Mach 2. The SR-71 plane is literally faster than the speeding bullets!

More info about the plane at the Wikipedia article. A lot of interesting info. For example, do you know that when the plane is not flying, the fuel would leak from its body since it was designed to fly at high speed so the friction would heat up, expand, and seal the joints in the plane?

Derivatives Are Free. Integrals Are One Baht Each

If you are learning calculus and don't know how to do basic calculus, you can go to Calc101.com and let their computers do the work.

Derivatives, polynomials multiplication and division are free. Integrals can be bought for $25 for 900 integrals. (If you don't pay, you won't see a step-by-step explanation of the integral. You will see the final result though.)

We Have A Testable Candidate For The Theory Of Everything!

For the past few hundred years, many scientists have tried to understand the relationship among the fundamental forces (gravity, electromagnetism, weak nuclear force, and strong nuclear force) and the various particles (electrons, quarks, etc.) that make up the matter in the Universe. The hope is to understand all these various things as aspects of one single unified idea. This is called searching for unification or searching for ToE (Theory of Everything.)

For the past twenty years, the mainstream idea about unification is the String Theory/M-Theory. I think the extremely large number (1 followed by around 500 zeroes) of possible versions of String Theory is a fatal flaw (since it's likely impossible to find experiments that rule out all versions) and blogged about a book that points this out.

Imagine my pleasure in seeing that there's an alternative candidate that can be either verified or refuted. I saw a headline called "Surfer dude stuns physicists with theory of everything" and my first reaction was he is probably another crank. Anyway, quite a few good physicists think the paper is not a joke, so I went to download it here (An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything).

My higher theoretical physics is extremely rusty but the paper sounds plausible. Most importantly, we will be able to check whether it's right or wrong in the next few years when suitable experiments are performed. From the paper:

The theory proposed in this paper represents a comprehensive unification program, describing all fields of the standard model and gravity as parts of a uniquely beautiful mathematical structure. The principal bundle connection and its curvature describe how the E8 manifold twists and turns over spacetime, reproducing all known fields and dynamics through pure geometry. Some aspects of this theory are not yet completely understood, anduntil they are it should be treated with appropriate skepticism. However, the current match to the standard model and gravity is very good. Future work will either strengthen the correlation to known physics and produce successful predictions for the LHC, or the theory will encounter a fatal contradiction with nature. The lack of extraneous structures and freeparameters ensures testable predictions, so it will either succeed or fail spectacularly. If E8 theory is fully successful as a theory of everything, our universe is an exceptionally beautiful shape.

More Pornography --> Less Rape?

It does sound plausible to me that the number of rapes would decrease when the potential perpetrators are looking at porn instead of actually committing the crime. Todd D. Kendall, an economist at Clemson University presented a paper that claims exactly that.

I was directed to that paper because I read this article by Steven E. Landsburg, the author of a very entertaining book, The Armchair Economist.

I wonder what the data for Thailand looks like.

There's a criticism of the paper here. An alternative possibility is suggested that the Internet might reduce the number of reported rapes, instead of the number of the crime.

Read the full paper describing how Ilka Diester and Andreas Nieder performed experiments suggesting that monkeys can count integers.

Next, we should teach them number theory so they can work on prime numbers. For some adventurous monkeys, we might try calculus, set theory, or differential geometry! Oh wait, we already have such monkeys, they are called math and physics grad students! :-D

Here is the Author Summary:

We use symbols, such as numbers, as mental tools for abstract and precise representations. Humans share with animals a language-independent system for representing numerical quantity, but number symbols are learned during childhood. A first step in the acquisition of number symbols constitutes an association of signs with specific numerical values of sets. To investigate the single-neuron mechanisms of semantic association, we simulated such a mapping process in rhesus monkeys by training them to associate the visual shapes of Arabic numerals with the numerosity of multiple-dot displays. We found that many individual neurons in the prefrontal cortex, but only a few in the posterior parietal cortex, responded in a tuned fashion to the same numerical values of dot sets and associated shapes. We called these neurons association neurons since they establish an associational link between shapes and numerical categories. The distribution of these association neurons across prefrontal and parietal areas resembles activation patterns in children and suggests a precursor of our symbol system in monkeys.

Causes (?) of Crime Rate Reduction

There are many interesting ideas (which might be right or wrong) about what caused crime rate reduction:

1. Fixing Broken Windows Effect: Fixing/preventing small crimes lead to fewer crimes in general. Criticism of the idea is here.

2. Legalized Abortion: Legal abortions lead to fewer unwanted babies, cutting down the number of criminals. Criticism here and here. However, in the extreme case, it's obvious that abortion does prevent crime--if there is no more baby, there will be no crime. :-D

3. Unleaded Fuel -> Less Crime: Presumably, lead turns people into idiots who commit more crimes. A paper can be found here.

It's interesting to note that abortion became legal in many US states around the same time that leaded fuel was banned.

If I have to bet which one is the most correct, I would bet on #3 more than on #2 and on #2 more than on #1.

I wonder what other toxic substances we are being exposed to will create problems in the coming decades.

You Too Can Be A Banker!

Banker to the Poor, that is.

Muhammad Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work advocating lending money to entrepreneurs too poor for traditional bank loans. The Grameen Bank became a prototype for microcredit lending organizations all over the world.

Through the wonder of the Internet, you too can be a banker to the poor entrepreneurs throughout the world. Check out Kiva.org and MicroPlace ("Invest wisely. End Poverty.") I think this is a good thing for the world. Less poverty, more freedom, more education, less chance of being exploited.

Traveller's Guides To The Universe

I found a few links that might be handy when we all can explore space:

2. What we can expect to see outside the window when we travel very fast: What would a relativistic interstellar traveller see?
3. Also, can we see the Lorentz-Fitzgeral contraction when we travel very fast?

To have some ideas about how big the universe is, think about this: In one second, light can travel the distance equivalent to about 7 times the Earth circumference. It takes light about 8 minutes to travel fromt the Sun to Earth. It takes light about 4 years to reach the nearest star outside the solar system. And it takes more than 10,000,000,000 years for light emitted by the farthest objects we can observe to reach Earth.

So, my plan is to live long enough to upload my brain state to cyborgs, wait till we have a warp drive, and explore the universe! :-D

Or maybe I will stay on Earth and watch Discovery Channel.

Oxygen Was Toxic To Life

Current living things require oxygen to live. It was not always like this. As a matter of fact, oxygen was downright poisonous to life and nearly destroyed all life on Earth.

The most readable account of this event can be found here. Around 2.4-2.5 billion years ago, global cooling almost turned Earth into an ice ball, destroying all life then.

Luckily, the Earth didn't turn into an ice ball, and some organisms adapted to use oxygen in energy production. In fact, every animal and plants descends from single cell ancestors that captured those oxygen-adapted organisms. I predict that Robert Axelrod will win a Nobel Prize for this work.

Well, he should anyway.

Now before you doubt my ability as a fortune teller, my Nobel prediction is currently 100% correct! In the late 1980's/early 1990's, I told my friends that Ahmed Zewail would surely win a Nobel prize in the future after listening to his talk about femtochemistry.

Well, one data point is probably a fluke anyway.

*Of course, fortune tellers seem to know the future by doing these:

1. Predict dramatic things.
2. Predict often.
3. Ignore wrong predictions.
4. Focus exclusively on correct predictions.
5. Master cold reading.

The correct question we should ask ourselves is "Does the fortune teller performs better than chance?" not "Does the fortune teller predicts anything correctly?" I'm quite sure that all fortune tellers are fraud. However, if any of them is real, there are many Nobel prizes awaiting those who can deduce the nature of time from those real fortune teller's performance.

T3 (AKA Tanya Saipetch) Has Arrived

Tanya is the biggest of all the T's, weighing in at 3,740 grams (8.2 lbs) and 52 cm (20.5") long. (Titus was 3,200 grams and Tatia was 3,000 grams.) She was born at 11:47 a.m.

She also has a lot of hair, an unusual occurrence in the history of the T's.

Aor and I came to Bangpo Hospital around 9 a.m. because today is the 39-week day for Tanya. Since Aor had caesarean sections for Titus and Tatia before, she would need to have another one for Tanya. I was a bit excited last night because this was the first time that we knew the date that the baby would come out--the other two times happened surprisingly, before the 39-week mark. Anyway, once we got to the operating room, it was quite familiar and calm. I recorded the procedure using a camcorder, being careful to record internal organs that Aor requested to see.

The operation started at 11 a.m. It took about 30 minutes to bring Tanya out and another 90 minutes to patch Aor up. Aor felt better than the last two times and she is now sleeping.

When asked about his feeling about another sister, Titus said, "I will delight her with hot chocolate."

When asked the same, Tatia said, "I'm a princess, whee, whee." (Thanks, Kevin & Rechelle!)
