Pain Control For Fun & Profit

When I was a boy, I read from somewhere (probably ต่วยตูน or มิติที่ 4) that people can reduce their pain by visualizing it as a ball and imagining it to be smaller and smaller. It has been a useful tip for me over two decades. I found that I can often reduce my feeling of pain by imagining my pain as a silvery ball which is slowly getting smaller and smaller. I tried fuzzy, woolly ball and also black rubber balls, but silvery balls work best for me. Also, it helps to have some time to prepare for the pain; if the pain is sudden, I have to collect my thought for a few seconds before I can start working down the pain.

Well, there is a scientific experiment that confirms that I am not crazy after all.

... Mackey and his team used fMRI to scan the brains of two groups of subjects: eight chronic pain patients and 36 healthy people who received pain via a non-harmful heat stimulus to the palm. Using state-of-the-art software, the team was able to analyze the fMRI images at the exact moments when the subjects experienced pain.

The researchers located the area of each subject's brain that responded to pain, and then allowed the subject to observe activity in that area as it occurred. Each participant was asked to "cognitively modulate" the brain signal...

... Over the course of three sessions, the patients overwhelmingly learned how to successfully modulate the signal and manage both the intensity and unpleasantness of their pain.

So, how did they do it? The researchers aren't sure.

"The challenge in this is that most people had a real difficult time describing what they were finally doing," Mackey said. "We don't really have a vernacular, a way of describing how we control our brains. When you reach out to grab a pencil, you couldn't really describe how you reached out to grab that pencil." ...

My Theory Is Confirmed By The CIA!

Right before the November 2004 election of the US President, Osama Bin-laden appeared in a videotape talking to the American people, denouncing George W. Bush, and urging the voters not to vote for Bush.

I read the news and turned to my friend Kwang and discussed with him about Bin-laden's intention.

We came up with these conclusions:

1. Bin-laden would like George Bush to win. A known, clumsy enemy, with a misguided policy is relatively safe for al-Qaeda and will harm the USA more than al-Qaeda could ever hope to accomplish.

2. Bush and Bin-laden are acting in a mutually beneficial manner by strengthening each other's power and influences.

Today, I read this article which states that the CIA had the same conclusions!

Some excerpts:

On Oct. 29, 2004, just four days before the U.S. presidential election, al-Qaeda leader Osama bin-Laden released a videotape denouncing George W. Bush. Some Bush supporters quickly spun the diatribe as “Osama’s endorsement of John Kerry.” But behind the walls of the CIA, analysts had concluded the opposite: that bin-Laden was trying to help Bush gain a second term...

...“At the five o’clock meeting, [deputy CIA director] John McLaughlin opened the issue with the consensus view: ‘Bin-Laden certainly did a nice favor today for the President.”
McLaughlin’s comment drew nods from CIA officers at the table. Jami Miscik, CIA deputy associate director for intelligence, suggested that the al-Qaeda founder may have come to Bush’s aid because bin-Laden felt threatened by the rise in Iraq of Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi; bin-Laden might have thought his leadership would be diminished if Bush lost the White House and their “eye-to-eye struggle” ended...

...After the 9/11 attacks, al-Qaeda’s gamble almost failed as the CIA, backed by U.S. Special Forces, ousted bin-Laden’s Taliban allies in Afghanistan and cornered much of the al-Qaeda leadership in the mountains of Tora Bora near the Pakistani border.
But instead of using U.S. ground troops to seal the border, Bush relied on the Pakistani army, which was known to have mixed sympathies about al-Qaeda. The Pakistani army moved its blocking force belatedly into position while bin-Laden and others from his inner circle escaped. Then, instead of staying focused on bin-Laden and his fellow fugitives, Bush moved on to other objectives. Bush shifted U.S. Special Forces away from bin-Laden and al-Qaeda and toward Saddam Hussein and Iraq...

He said one theory is that the average 1.2 liters of green tea consumed daily by many people in Asia offers the anti-oxidant protective effects of the polyphenolic EGCG. EGCG may prevent LDL oxidation, which has been shown to play a key role in the pathophysiology of arteriosclerosis. EGCG also reduces the amount of platelet aggregation, regulates lipids, and promotes proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells, which are all factors in reducing cardiovascular disease, he said.

อ้อบอกว่าควรไปหาดูใน Internet ว่าจะทำหนังสือเดินทางใหม่อย่างไร

ผมค้นหา คำว่า "ทำ passport" ใน Google ไม่พบหน้าที่น่าสนใจ
ค้น "หลักฐาน ทำ passport" พบหน้าใน pantip.com อ่านผ่านๆ แล้วตัดสินใจไปดูที่เว็บกระทรวงต่างประเทศที่นี่

สิ่งที่น่าสนใจก็คือหนังสือเดินทางใหม่มี electronic chip ที่เก็บข้อมูล สามารถรับได้ใน 2 วันทำการ และใช้ บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนเป็นหลักฐานเท่านั้น

นอกจากนี้ยังมี สิ่งน่าสนใจจาก blog นี้ เช่น

Another Sign That The US Is Becoming A Third World Country...

A third-world country with the military power to destroy human civilization, that is.

I read an interesting interview by a former UN weapon inspector (and an alleged spy) about the US-Middle East situation. A few excerpts are shown below with my highlight in red:

On the plan to attack Iran without any good reason:

That’s why when I speak of Iran, I say be careful of falling into the trap of nonproliferation, disarmament, weapons of mass destruction; this is a smokescreen. The Bush administration does not have policy of disarmament vis-a-vis Iran. They do have a policy of regime change. If we had a policy of disarmament, we would have engaged in unilateral or bilateral discussions with the Iranians a long time ago. But we put that off the table because we have no desire to resolve the situation we use to facilitate the military intervention necessary to achieve regime change. It’s the exact replay of the game plan used for Iraq, where we didn’t care what Saddam did, what he said, what the weapons inspectors found. We created the perception of a noncompliant Iraq, and we stuck with that perception, selling that perception until we achieved our ultimate objective, which was invasion that got rid of Saddam. With Iran, we are creating the perception of a noncompliant Iran, a threatening Iran. It doesn’t matter what the facts are. Now that we have successfully created that perception, the Bush administration will move forward aggressively until it achieves its ultimate objective, which is regime change.

On general population ignorance:

What is it about Americans that allows them to get so bent out of shape when you start questioning the government in a time of war?

I’ll say ignorance. How many Americans have read the Constitution and know the Constitution, live the Constitution, breathe the Constitution, define their existence as Americans by the Constitution? Very few. And so what happens is, Americans have no concept of what citizenship is, what it is they’re supposed to serve. Many Americans have become so addicted to a lifestyle that I say they’re better consumers than they are citizens. And it’s these consumers who have wrapped themselves in a cocoon of comfort and who have basically abrogated their responsibilities of citizenship to the government, and as long as the government keeps them waddling down the path to prosperity, they don’t want to rock the boat. And they will go out and attack those who do rock the boat—those who challenge authority.

If you read the Constitution, you’ll be struck by the first words: “We the people of the United States.” And yet it sickens me where Americans will say, in the name of security, they will give up their constitutional rights. Warrantless wiretapping—it’s against the law! This is the sort of issue that should bring Americans streaming into the streets, saying, “Not on my watch.” If your definition of patriotism is blind subservience to governmental authority, then you’ve just defined those Germans who supported Hitler, the Italians who supported Mussolini.

Looking at the bright side, Thailand can catch up with the US if we succeed in firing and jailing crooks that rob our countries like Bush/Blair/Berlusconi rob theirs. China might even be more democratic than the US within this century!

I told my wife about my previous post about Colonel Petrov, and she reminded me that one of my favorite songs that I use to brainwash her is very relevant. The 1984 song is in German and is called "99 Luftballons." It was translated into English as "99 Red Balloons."

If This Man Believed His Computer, We Would Likely Be Dead By Now

On September 26, 1983, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, who was the Russian officer who oversaw his country's missile attack warning system, refused to believe his computer that told him that the USA had launched several nuclear missiles toward his country.

The computer (with inputs from spy satellites) told him a single missile was coming. He reasoned that if the USA was attacking, there would be more than one missile. A short time later, the computer told him another four missiles were coming.

If he had decided the warning was real, he would have initiated the retaliation response that would launch nuclear missiles toward the USA, which in turn would start a full-scale nuclear exchange, destroying the world civilization.

He decided the warning was a false alarm and advised other people as such. Some time later, his decision was proven right. There was no attack from the US. Homo sapiens avoided its extinction once more.

Weightlessness & Reconnaissance Training

On Saturday April 1, 2006, Titus and Tatia learned two new lessons from my world-famous crime fighting program. (Goto kostuff.blogspot.com if you don't see any pictures.)

In the first half the the day, they underwent an introductory lesson in weightlessness, a very useful skill when they need to chase criminals over inter-galactic distance:

In the afternoon, they learned about covert operations. The first thing to learn was about reconnaissance. Tatia learned to use her finger-radio to report her observations to the base while Titus operated microscopic binoculars, aptly disguised as a harmless, small black plastic disk:

The training robot (which participated as the enemy target) spotted Tatia's huge head and tagged her with paralyzing beam, while Titus looked on in amazement:

Considering their young ages, getting tagged by the training robot on the first day is considered normal. They will surely continue to refine their skills in the coming weeks.

Titus' Combat Training Progress

It has been almost three months since Titus enrolled in my world-famous crime-fighting program.

Today, I taught him how to take down a polar bear using bare hands. The important thing is to avoid getting smacked by the bear and focus on his weak spots. Next week's lessons will include how to take down multiple polar bears using a pair of chopsticks and a few super-hard snowballs.

As usual, Titus learned his lesson well although he has to work on his height a bit to use the various techniques. He can take down a small polar bear his height though. (If you don't see any picture, go to kostuff.blogspot.com)

Right now, I'm learning Bayesian statistics for mathematical modelling for my friends' projects.

I remember that when I was in highschool, I must remember how various car engines work to pass some stupid tests. That was totally painful and not at all fun.

Learning is fun again.

I guess having to know something to pass a test is not a good way to learn things. Learning should be a reward, not a duty.

Dear Singaporean Friends

Dear Singaporean Friends,

I've always admired your country for its effective transformation from abject poverty to a first-class country in only a few decades. I've always admired your diligence and work ethics whenever I have a chance to work with you. Whenever I visited your country, I feel very safe and welcome wherever I went.

Your society is perceived to be quite free of corruption. I admire this greatly, given that Thailand is down there in the list at #59 and your country is near the top at #5. There are some complaints about relative lack of freedom of speech, but most of you seem to accept that as a price for a stable, prosperous society. This works as long as your government is relatively benign.

However, I have some concerns of my own to share with you. I don't mind Singaporean investments in my country as long as they are governed by high standard of ethics. However, the recent Temasek's buy-out of Shin Corporation reeks of somthing quite rotten.

Many people perceived, rightly or wrongly, that Temasek is colluding with our Prime Minister to rip off Thai people of strategic assets. The way the deal was structured suggested elaborate financial shenanigans planned ahead by the parties involved.

This shook my good-feeling toward Singapore greatly.

I think Thailand and Singapore should be friendly neighbors that can complement each other in many areas. I have no problem with Singaporeans. You are all welcome whenever you come here. I have a favor to ask you though: Could you please not support ripping off Thai people? Please ask for explanations from your government about this deal.

Corruption is contagious. If your country contracts Thailand's corruption and your government can act without accountability, your life might be drastically less stable and less prosperous in a few short years. That is something that none of us wants.

So, please help both Thailand and Singapore by demanding high standard of ethics from your government. Please don't let your government bend moral rules for financial gains.

Why Geeks Make Good Fathers, Super Stone Skipping, and FakeAlibi Service

When I showed my wife this link about "Top ten reasons Geeks make good fathers", she laughed out loud and told me that I possessed a lot of traits in the list of reasons, especially Lego, math, up on technology, science fair projects, and toy assembly.

One of the things a geek might enjoy is stone skipping. My personal record is 7 skips before the stone disappeared in water. The Guinness World Record holder is Kurt Steiner, with 40 skips! You have to go to this website and see the videos!

On a totally unrelated topic, for those of you contemplating about cheating your significant other, see this article about a service that will provide you with perfect alibi for your affairs.

A Super-Duper Image Denoising Algorithm!

"GREYCSTORATION is an image regularization algorithm which processes an image by locally removing small variations of pixel intensities while preserving significant global image features, such as sharp edges and corners. Software Horror Stories To Keep Programmers Humble

When I was young, I thought sofware was easy, my programs would contain no bug, and I would finish them quickly.

I was an arrogant fool.

Now that I'm no longer young and very slightly less foolish, I expect the worst when I write any piece of code. Now, I try to always program defensively, trying to eliminate the chance that a bug will occur. I think about preconditions, postconditions, and invariants. Alway ask myself how I know the code is correct. Test a lot. Think things through before coding. Remember that shortcuts rarely are short but almost always cut.

I consider myself fortunate that when my software failed, nobody died.

Others were not so fortunate.

This Software Horror Stories page shows us what disasters did happen when software failed. People who made these softwares were probably quite smart and experienced. They knew how well their software must perform. They knew what the stakes were. Yet they failed. Spectacularly.

Younglings, it's better to learn from others' mistakes. There are some good free tips. There are a lot of great books. I can recommend three: Code Complete, The Mythical Man-Month, and Facts and Fallacies in Software Engineering.

The most important thing is to start with the will to make good software, work at it a lot, work at it constantly until it's a habit.

Kind of like dieting.

By the way, do you know that when Thai government is signing the FTA (Free Trade Agreements) with various countries, the agreements are not reviewed by the paliament? This stinks like Enron or Worldcom situations. Power without accountability does poison the human mind.

Anyway, my 92-year old grandma insists that Karma exists and the wicked will be punished. I say it better works before the wicked die because if the wheel of Karma requires reincarnation, it would be effectively as if there is no Karma at all, since nobody remembers their past lives anyway. (I personally believe that when I die, "I" will just ceast to exist and my former body will be either dust, ash, animals', plants', bacteria's food, or combination of the above. That's why I need to see bad deeds punished before the perpetrators die.)

Another Site Of Well-Designed Products

I linked to a site that exhibits clever/well-designed stuffs before.

Here is another such site. It's by Don Norman, the author of an interesting book called "The Design of Everyday Things". There are many interesting essays by Professor Norman that you can read at the site too.

Professor Norman is a cognitive scientist who does not bullshit, thus having quite valuable insight into how human-product interaction should work. In my experience, people with good psychology training (who do not bullshit) tend to be better than most people at writing specifications for software systems.

The movie looks great but since I have seen previous King Kong movies many times, there is no new story to surprise me. It's also probably too scary for young children. The best thing for me is to look at Ann and Kong. (Ann, because she is pretty; Kong, because he was rendered so well.)

Ann Darrow is played by the very beautiful Naomi Watts. I was waiting for her to be a big movie star since I first saw her a decade ago. (I think her best movie is David Lynch's Mulholland Dr. If you like a haunting story, you might want to try it too.)

Now that Titus is 28 months old, he is starting his training in my world-famous crime-fighting program (Figure 1.) This is imperative because, as the future inventor of the warp drive, Titus must necessarily assume the role of a time-travelling enforcer to prevent criminals from messing with our universe's chronology.)

Aor also enrolled Tatia (20 days old) into her Orpheus whistling program (Figure 2.) We suspect the ability to resurrect the dead with music will be very hip in about 20 years. We would prefer the Phra-A-Pai-Ma-Nee training but it's a lost art and neither of us can google it.

Titus & Tatia

We brought Tatia home from the hospital yesterday.

Titus was very excited to meet his sister. He requested to hold her so I got him sitting on my lap and we held Tatia together.

Tatia also "brought" a few toys for Titus, so he was doubly happy. (Thanks, Atrium staff!)

When Titus woke up today, the first thing he did was asking to see his "Nong" (sister). It was unusually easy to get him to brush his teeth because my wife told him he had to do it before kissing his sister.

Greatest Father's Day Gift: Tatia Is Coming To Town!*

My wife (Aor) and I are very happy to announce the arrival of Tatia ("ธัชธีญา" in Thai), our second child.

She was born at 12:57 pm on December 5, 2005 at Bangpo General Hospital. She weighs 3030 grams (6.66 lbs) and is 53 cm (21") long.

Aor woke up around 3 am this morning with periodic (period = 5-10 minutes) hardening of her belly. This is one of the symptoms that our doctor (Dr. Vichit) told us to look for as a sign of imminent delivery. We decided to come to see Dr. Vichit in the morning. I had a huge breakfast while Aor had a glass of water in preparation of the possible surgery. We threw in the backpacks containing baby delivery survival gears into the back of our car and off we went to the hospital. (We left Titus with his nanny, his paternal grand mom and his paternal great grand mom at home at this time.)

After 30 minutes of examination, Dr. Vichit ordered the delivery room to prepare for the arrival of our daughter. Since Aor already had a cesarean section for our son Titus (due to a birth complication--she waited for 6 hours but her uterus was not opening), she would have to have another for Tatia also.

Aor went in to the delivery room, got her spinal chord blocked in 10 minutes. I cleaned up and went in with my video recorder. The operation to take Tatia out took about 40 minutes; patching up Aor took another 1.5 hour. All in all, it took only 4 hours from the time we arrived at the hospital to the time we got into the convalescent room.

Titus is now with Aor's parents who live only about 1o minutes from the hospital. He would be visiting during the day and stay overnight at their house. Aor's sister Aw is taking 3 days off from work to help us out.

We didn't plan it, but our son Titus was born on August 12 which is the Queen's birthday and Tatia was born on December 5 which is the King's birthday. I totally don't believe in auspicious timing but of all the possible dates that they could have been born, these sound very good indeed! Also, we run out of the comparable dates for our next few children.

All in all, it's a very exciting and joyful day for us :-)

(The chance of having a son born on Aug 12 then a daughter born on Dec 5 purely by chance is about (0.5)(1/365)(0.5)(1/365) = slightly less than 2 in a million.)

*Today is Father's Day in Thailand. It's also our beloved King Bhumibol's birthday.

Each of us is among the 6 billions on Earth, a small planet in a small solar system.

Our sun is just one among 100,000,000,000 stars in our Milky Way galaxy.

Our galaxy is just one among 100,000,000,000 galaxies in the known universe.

There might be so many universes besides our own, but we don't know for sure.

Our life span of 100 years is nothing compare to our sun's age of 5,000,000,000 years. (Stars last from a few ten millions to a few ten billions of years.)

Our whole life is just a flicker of candle light in the thunderstorm of time.

Yet, we have thoughts, morals, creativity, compassion, and love for other human beings.

I don't think all those stars out there can feel love.

(Anyway, what do I know? Maybe ants feel love too, though I doubt it since they have only 100,000 brain cells. By the way, we have about 100,000,000,000 neurons in our head.)

Looking at all those space pictures somehow soothed my soul very pleasantly.

I think the word "sublime" approximates my feeling pretty accurately.
