Five Interesting Psychological Experiments

Cracked.com has this entertaining and interesting link about five psychological experiments that prove humanity is doomed.  It's funny and disturbing to see how conforming, hypocritical, apathetic, sadistic, and yielding to authority we are.

Focused Radiation From Nuclear Fusion Explosion*

This phenomenon is also known as focusing sun light.

Once again, Krit sent me very interesting links.  This time, it's about focusing sun light to burn stuffs.

The first one is how MIT students performed a feasibility study of the legend that Archimedes of Syracuse (the Eureka guy, an inventor of integral calculus and other genius stuffs) used sun light to burn enemy's ships.  Let me show you the final result:

The other is about how a parabolic satellite dish can be converted into a "Light Sharpener" that can burn and boil stuffs very quickly:

I went through all 23 pages of the project.  It's very instructive and entertaining.

When people asked me my opinion about whether we should have nuclear power in Thailand, I always said I like it very much as long as the reactor is a fusion reactor 8.3 light-minutes (150 million kilometers) away.

ศาลรัฐธรรมนูญ โดยมติเอกฉันท์วินิจฉัย คำแถลงการณ์ร่วมไทย - กัมพูชาฉบับลงวันที่ 18 มิถุนายน 2551 มีลักษณะครบองค์ประกอบของความเป็นสนธิสัญญาตามอนุสัญญากรุงเวียนนาว่าด้วยกฎหมายสิทธิสัญญา ค.ศ. 1969 และเป็นไปตามคำวินิจฉัยศาลรัฐธรรมนูญที่ 11/2542 และที่ 33/2543 จึงเป็นหนังสือสัญญาตามรัฐธรรมนูญ มาตรา 190

ประเด็นที่สอง หนังสือสัญญาดังกล่าวเป็นหนังสือสัญญาตามรัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย พุทธศักราช 2550 มาตรา 190 วรรคสอง ซึ่งต้องได้รับความเห็นชอบของรัฐสภาหรือไม่

Riemann Hypothesis Comic

I found this comic to be hilarious and instructive about the Riemann hypothesis which states that all non-trivial zeroes of the Riemann zeta function have real part equal to 1/2.

Death From The Sky (Sigh)

"The long range precision shooting skills of the military sniper team have found increasing utility in the urban combat environment of Iraq and sparsely populated regions of Afghanistan.  Unfortunately, the speed and effectiveness of a sniper team is limited by the need to find concealed firing locations in range of the adversary.  The remotely operated UAV Sniper system will remove this requirement while drastically increasing capability and keeping the shooter out of harms way."

From the picture, I wonder how they can keep pointing the gun at the target.  I expected a balloon, not a fixed-wing, flying robot.

Memento mori?

According to Wikipedia, Memento mori may be translated as "Remember that you will die.",  a warning that is applicable to human throughout our history.

However, many people such as these people are working on making death unnecessary.   Hopefully, we will live long enough for their research to be practical.  After that we can wait for brain state backup technologies and escape from our mortal flesh eventually.

On a slightly related note, one speculation that tries to explain the Fermi's Paradox is that the aliens already uploaded their mind to other computational substrate and don't care so much to contact primitive technological societies like ours.  The uploaded minds might use little energy, can be transmitted at the speed of light, can exploit computational capacity of complex systems found in the universe, and can run at much higher speed than biological hardware, making their subjective time much faster.  Due to this time scale difference, their conversation with us might be similar to our conversation with a tree.

(Technically, the 1982 Soviet gas pipeline "bug" worked exactly as the designers intended, so I don't think it's a bug at all.)

Teach Yourself Electronics

Here're easy to understand online books about electric circuits.  The books can also be downloaded as HTML or PDF for offline viewing. Combining this with misconceptions about electricity should be a good introduction to how electricity works.  Chalked up as another resource for my kids' education.

The news about the fabrication of memristors by HP got me interested in electric circuits, a long forgotten part of my training, again.

Fractal Cookies

I have talked about the Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories before, but this recipe for making fractal cookies deserves a special mention for its extreme mathematical coolness (or geekiness, depending on your point of view.)

Another Great Physicist Passed Away

John Archibald Wheeler passed away today.

He was a living legend, had many fantastical ideas, taught and inspired generations of physicists including Richard Feynman and Kip Thorne.

I only knew him from his General Relativity book and his lectures about It-from-Bit.

 

For an example of the kind of things he imagined, check this passage from his wikipedia page:  ...theorizes experiments utilizing photons from distant locations in the universe, imaged using galaxy clusters as lenses, but which are detected using apparatus for quantum entanglement, thereby influencing history billions of years in the past.

There is also a heartfelt essay by one of his former students here.

Moses Has Left The Building

I only knew Charlton Heston as Moses, Ben-Hur, El Cid, the guy who found Soylent Green's secret, and the guy who fought the apes in the original Planet of the Apes, and I knew he was the president of the NRA for a few years, but I never knew about his political activities.

Although I disagree with many of his positions (like campaigning for G. W. Bush), I think this speech is pretty cool. An excerpt:

You simply disobey. Peaceably, yes. Respectfully, of course. Nonviolently, absolutely. But when told how to think or what to say or how to behave, we don't. We disobey the social protocol that stifles and stigmatizes personal freedom.

I learned the awesome power of disobedience from Dr. King who learned it from Gandhi, and Thoreau, and Jesus, and every other great man who led those in the right against those with the might.

Charlton Heston died on April 5, 2008.

I'm So Glad The Universe Is So Big

Yesterday, Earth happened to cross a gamma ray burst beam. Had we been within a few thousand light years of the source, all life on Earth would be extinct by now. Everyone we love would have been gone. Life on Earth would have been terminated. It would have been a quick death because the devastation moves toward us at the speed of light--there would not be any advanced warning.

We were so lucky, the source is about 7,500,000,000 light years away, so I am still typing and you are still reading this. (One light year is about 9,460,000,000,000 km.)

The Bad Astronomer Blog has a good write up about this. A particular interesting passage:

"Let me put this in perspective for you. Imagine a one megaton nuclear weapon detonating. That’s roughly 50 times the explosive yield of the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. Devastating.

The Sun, every second of every day of every year, gives off 100 billion times this much energy. That’s every second. A star is a terrifying object.

In the few seconds that a gamma-ray burst lasts, it packs a million million million times that much energy into its beams. In other words, for those few ticks of a clock the GRB is sending out more energy than the Sun will in its entire lifetime.

There is, quite simply, no way to exaggerate the devastation of a gamma-ray burst."

CNN also has a news article about this event.

BTW, the picture of the satellite on this post is the Swift satellite, the detector of yesterday's burst. It was designed specifically to look for gamma ray sources in the sky.

What Is "Load Average" In Top's Output Anyway?

When I started using Unix in 1989, I learned about the "top" command to see how hard the computer was working. There are many numbers in top's output. Some (such as time, uptime, number of users, CPU states, etc.) are easy to understand. However, I never really understood what "load average" means.

Of course, if the computer is doing nothing, the load average would be low, and if the computer is busy, the load average will be large. However, the number can go much higher than 1, so it's not the fraction of the computer's capacity that is being used. I was never curious enough to find out exactly what that number means, and just settled for general feeling of typical numbers that would be "safe" for each computer.

Now, thanks to the magic of the Internet, the exact meaning can easily be found here and here. (Yes, it's easily found, but to really understand it, you need to read till the end.)

To summarize:

So, what have we learned? Those three innocuous looking numbers in the LA triplet have a surprising amount of depth behind them.

The triplet is intended to provide you with some kind of information about how much work has been done on the system in the recent past (1 minute), the past (5 minutes) and the distant past (15 minutes).

Those three little numbers tucked away innocently in certain UNIX commands are not so trivial after all. The first point is that load in this context refers to run-queue length (i.e., the sum of the number of processes waiting in the run-queue plus the number currently executing). Therefore, the number is absolute (not relative) and thus it can be unbounded; unlike utilization (AKA ``load'' in queueing theory parlence).

Two Laws That More People Should Know About

I knew about them when I was in my early 20's and I wished I had known about them earlier.

The first is Zipf's law, which "...states that given some corpus of natural language utterances, the frequency of any word is inversely proportional to its rank in the frequency table. Thus the most frequent word will occur approximately twice as often as the second most frequent word, which occurs twice as often as the fourth most frequent word, etc."

It's a special case of the general power law distribution which many natural phenomena seem to exhibit.

The other law is Benford's law, which "...states that in lists of numbers from many real-life sources of data, the leading digit is 1 almost one third of the time, and larger numbers occur as the leading digit with less and less frequency as they grow in magnitude, to the point that 9 is the first digit less than one time in twenty. This is based on the observation that real-world measurements are generally distributed logarithmically, thus the logarithm of a set of real-world measurements is generally distributed uniformly."

Benford's law is applicable to "... a wide variety of figures, including electricity bills, street addresses, stock prices, population numbers, death rates, lengths of rivers, physical and mathematical constants, and processes described by power laws (which are very common in nature). "

Benford's law is also used successfully to detect accounting frauds, scientific frauds, electoral frauds, and other types of frauds. Just google for "fraud detection benford" and you will see a lot of examples.
