Superhero Lesson #158: Levitation

Titus and Tatia's superhero training is coming along nicely. The other day, Titus showed us how he could easily levitate himself a few inches off the ground. With regular practice, he should be able to leap over tall buildings within a year or so.

I'm So Glad The Universe Is So Big

Yesterday, Earth happened to cross a gamma ray burst beam. Had we been within a few thousand light years of the source, all life on Earth would be extinct by now. Everyone we love would have been gone. Life on Earth would have been terminated. It would have been a quick death because the devastation moves toward us at the speed of light--there would not be any advanced warning.

We were so lucky, the source is about 7,500,000,000 light years away, so I am still typing and you are still reading this. (One light year is about 9,460,000,000,000 km.)

The Bad Astronomer Blog has a good write up about this. A particular interesting passage:

"Let me put this in perspective for you. Imagine a one megaton nuclear weapon detonating. That’s roughly 50 times the explosive yield of the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. Devastating.

The Sun, every second of every day of every year, gives off 100 billion times this much energy. That’s every second. A star is a terrifying object.

In the few seconds that a gamma-ray burst lasts, it packs a million million million times that much energy into its beams. In other words, for those few ticks of a clock the GRB is sending out more energy than the Sun will in its entire lifetime.

There is, quite simply, no way to exaggerate the devastation of a gamma-ray burst."

BTW, the picture of the satellite on this post is the Swift satellite, the detector of yesterday's burst. It was designed specifically to look for gamma ray sources in the sky.

I became interested in ant behaviors when I read "Journey to the Ants" back in 1995. What I found most amazing was that some ants use tools in their warfare.

Some people solve optimization problems by emulating what ants do. Their finding is called ant colony optimization. I think it's very clever.

What Is "Load Average" In Top's Output Anyway?

When I started using Unix in 1989, I learned about the "top" command to see how hard the computer was working. There are many numbers in top's output. Some (such as time, uptime, number of users, CPU states, etc.) are easy to understand. However, I never really understood what "load average" means.

Of course, if the computer is doing nothing, the load average would be low, and if the computer is busy, the load average will be large. However, the number can go much higher than 1, so it's not the fraction of the computer's capacity that is being used. I was never curious enough to find out exactly what that number means, and just settled for general feeling of typical numbers that would be "safe" for each computer.

Now, thanks to the magic of the Internet, the exact meaning can easily be found here and here. (Yes, it's easily found, but to really understand it, you need to read till the end.)

To summarize:

So, what have we learned? Those three innocuous looking numbers in the LA triplet have a surprising amount of depth behind them.

The triplet is intended to provide you with some kind of information about how much work has been done on the system in the recent past (1 minute), the past (5 minutes) and the distant past (15 minutes).

Those three little numbers tucked away innocently in certain UNIX commands are not so trivial after all. The first point is that load in this context refers to run-queue length (i.e., the sum of the number of processes waiting in the run-queue plus the number currently executing). Therefore, the number is absolute (not relative) and thus it can be unbounded; unlike utilization (AKA ``load'' in queueing theory parlence).

Two Laws That More People Should Know About

I knew about them when I was in my early 20's and I wished I had known about them earlier.

The first is Zipf's law, which "...states that given some corpus of natural language utterances, the frequency of any word is inversely proportional to its rank in the frequency table. Thus the most frequent word will occur approximately twice as often as the second most frequent word, which occurs twice as often as the fourth most frequent word, etc."

It's a special case of the general power law distribution which many natural phenomena seem to exhibit.

The other law is Benford's law, which "...states that in lists of numbers from many real-life sources of data, the leading digit is 1 almost one third of the time, and larger numbers occur as the leading digit with less and less frequency as they grow in magnitude, to the point that 9 is the first digit less than one time in twenty. This is based on the observation that real-world measurements are generally distributed logarithmically, thus the logarithm of a set of real-world measurements is generally distributed uniformly."

Benford's law is applicable to "... a wide variety of figures, including electricity bills, street addresses, stock prices, population numbers, death rates, lengths of rivers, physical and mathematical constants, and processes described by power laws (which are very common in nature). "

Benford's law is also used successfully to detect accounting frauds, scientific frauds, electoral frauds, and other types of frauds. Just google for "fraud detection benford" and you will see a lot of examples.

Richard Feynman is my scientific hero. I decided to get real science education after reading the first few chapters from these books by him. I found these quotes when I'm ordering another of his books:

Harddisk Crash In Tibet

This article describes how a harddisk might crash in high-altitude places, like Tibet.

I try to search for operating altitude for harddisks, and they all seem to be working up to about 3 km from the sea level due to the lower air pressure in high altitude.

I don't know why the computer loaned to the article's author worked though. May be its disk is one of the Endurstar harddisks that operate up to 5 km.

Progress Bars To Make People Happier

Chris Harrison et al. has a paper showing that people perceive time as running faster if they are looking at an appropriately accelerating progress bar. It seems that a progress bar that slows in the beginning and accelerates near the end (called "Fast Power" in the paper) makes people happiest. The study focused on the duration of 5.5 seconds and suggested that other longer durations should be further investigated.

I never asked myself how a progress bar should move to please people. I'm glad there are people like Chris who thinks of these things. He also has a lot of interesting projects here.

Linus On Evolution

Linus Torvalds, the Linux kernel creator, in responding to a complaint why the kernel has evolved via "sheer luck", has this interesting view about engineering complex things. An Excerpt in italic:

"...You know what the most complex piece of engineering known to man in the whole solar system is?

Guess what - it's not Linux, it's not Solaris, and it's not your car.

It's you. And me.

And think about how you and me actually came about - not through any complex design.

Right. "sheer luck".

Well, sheer luck, AND:

- free availability and _crosspollination_ through sharing of "source code", although biologists call it DNA.
- a rather unforgiving user environment, that happily replaces bad versions of us with better working versions and thus culls the herd (biologists often call this "survival of the fittest")
- massive undirected parallel development ("trial and error")..."

The same process probably underlies the relative success of capitalism. Of course, capitalism might be too successful and hastens our species' extinction.

I actually could understand it in one pass of reading. (It usually takes me many reading passes to understand any algorithm--I'm dense that way.)

If you have children, they should have some basic math and probability skills. Rational thoughts need those skills. Otherwise, they won't be able to make quantitative comparisons.

Ah, What A Sweet Memory!

My first computer, the Atari 400, is one of the top ten computers with the worst keyboards!

I got it when I was 12. The price was 12,000 baht which was a large sum at the time. I went to Hong Kong for the first time with my family and we bought it there. I told my grandpa that it was for education when in fact it had a big library of games. (I even told him about eye-hand coordination while I was commanding a starship in the excellent Star Raiders game.)

The funny thing is, I played games less and less and programmed more and more for the next few years. I learned English out of necessity to understand how to program that computer in BASIC. I made some stupid chasing games and plotted many pretty (in my opinion) curves. On the other hand, those curves must look really bad now with the resolution I used then (320x192) compared to what I have now (1440x900 to 1680x1050.) Very amazing what a 1.79 megahertz CPU and 8 kilobytes of RAM could do.

I didn't even notice that its keyboard was bad.

Dream = Our Private Virtual Reality Training?

According to this article, nightmares are the brain's training to respond to threatening situations in real life. This hypothesis explains my frequent dreaming about fighting monsters in my dreams :-) I think I actually get better at shooting double-taps in real life since I did it hundreds of time in my brain's simulation but very few times in reality because of the high cost of ammunition. In my dreams, I usually get attacked from the side -- that probably means I should look around for monsters waiting to ambush me if I ever go on Zombie hunting.

The ingenious part is the description of how the researchers prevent their mice from dreaming. It's clever and hilarious (to us; to the mice, it is maddening.)

(เรื่องนี้ต่อจาก ทำไมการดูชะตาชีวิตด้วยวันเดือนปีเกิดจึงไม่น่าจะทำได้)

ผมอ่านเนชั่นสุดสัปดาห์ ประจำวันที่ 28 ธันวาคม 2550 ถึงบทความเรื่อง "ระทึก 'เหลือง-แดง' ลุ้นเอกภาพ '5 อรหันต์' ปัจจัยชี้ขาดศึกชิงอำนาจ" ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับการที่ หนึ่งในห้ากรรมการ กกต. ดูเหมือนจะทำงานชักช้า เหมือนใส่เกียร์ว่าง ไม่ทำหน้าที่ของตนให้เต็มที่

ระวังการเลือกตั้งด้วยเครื่องอิเลคทรอนิค e-Voting

ในที่สุดรัฐ Ohio สหรัฐอเมริกาก็ออกมาเปิดเผยผลสอบความ(ไม่)น่าไว้วางใจ ในการลงคะแนนเลือกตั้งด้วยเครื่องอีเลคทรอนิค (e-voting, สรุปอ่านง่ายๆที่นี่)

ผมปักใจเชื่อว่ามีการโกงเลือกตั้งในสหรัฐในปี 2000 และ 2004 เนื่องจากผลคลาดเคลื่อนจากโพลที่มีมาตรฐาน (ผลคลาดเคลื่อนเป็นบวกกับ Republican เสมอในทุกแห่งที่มีความคลาดเคลื่อน นอกจากนี้ยังคลาดเคลื่อนเฉพาะในเขตที่ใช้ e-voting ด้วย, อ้ออีกอย่าง ผมพูดถึงโพลมีมาตรฐานเท่านั้นนะครับ ไม่ใช่โพลไม่มีมาตรฐานเช่นอันนี้ )

ถ้ามีผู้แทนในประเทศไทยมาเสนอ e-voting ผมขอแปลงคำเตือนของ Don Corleone ในหนัง The Godfather มาใช้ว่า "Listen, whoever comes to you with this e-voting meeting he's the traitor. Don't forget that." คนที่จะนำเสนอไม่ Stupid (ไม่รู้ว่า e-voting โกงง่าย) ก็ Evil (กะจะโกงซะเอง) ล่ะครับ

Solving Sudoku Puzzles

I was thinking about writing a program to solve Sudoku puzzles for fun. Before I started writing, I did a quick Google search to see what programs are available. The search turned up many results, the most impressive of which is this essay by Peter Norvig (who co-wrote a famous AI book and is currently the Director of Research at Google)

The full Python source is only about 100 lines and it solves hard Sudoku puzzles very quickly. Therefore, my plan to write the ultimate Sudoku solver is derailed by Dr. Norvig's brilliance
