ถ้าอยากสร้างเสียงภูเขาไฟระเบิด ต้องใช้ลำโพงนี้เลย

ผมไปเห็นโฆษณาลำโพงติดรถแบบนี้ครับ

เขาบอกว่าทำเสียงดัง 180.6 dB หรือ decibels (แม้ว่าภาพ LED จะอ่านว่า 180.8 ก็เถอะ)

ผมจำได้ลางๆว่าเสียงประมาณ 100 dB ถ้าฟังนานๆหูจะเสีย และถ้าดังประมาณ 140-150 dB ก็จะทำให้หูเสียทันทีเลย จึงไปหาตารางว่าเสียง 180 dB ดังเทียบกับอะไรได้บ้าง

จากตารางที่ Wikipedia Decibel Table และ The Engineering Toolbox ผมเจอข้อมูลดังนี้:

เสียงเครื่องเจาะถนน (ห่าง 1 เมตร) = 100 dB

เสียงคอนเสิร์ทร็อค (ห่าง 2 เมตร) = 120 dB

เสียงปืนไรเฟิล (ห่าง 1 เมตร) = 140 dB

เสียงเครื่องยนต์ไอพ่น (ห่าง 30 เมตร) =150 dB

เสียงปืนไรเฟิลแบบ M1 Garand แบบใน Saving Private Ryan (ห่าง 1 เมตร) = 168 dB

เสียงภูเขาไฟกรากะตั้วระเบิด (ห่าง 160 km) = 180 dB

ดังนั้นถ้าอยากดูหนังสงครามเช่น Saving Private Ryan หรือทำเสียงภูเขาไฟระเบิดให้สมจริงต้องไปฟังในรถเลย แต่หูพังแน่ครับ

ปล. 

เคยไปยิงปืน แล้วมีคนยิงไรเฟิลขนาด .308 แล้วผมไม่ได้ใส่หูฟังตัดเสียง สะดุ้งโหยง เจ็บหู และมีเสียงหวี่ๆในหูอีกเป็นวันครับ เข้าใจว่าขนรับเสียงในหูคงถูกคลื่นเสียงซัดจนบาดเจ็บหรือตายไปเลย ผมดูจากขนาดกระสุนแล้วเข้าใจว่าเสียงน่าจะประมาณ 150-160 dB

ภูเขาไฟกรากะตั้วอยู่ในอินโดนีเซีย ระเบิดเมื่อเกือบ 130 ปีมาแล้ว ตอนระเบิดปล่อยพลังงานประมาณ 13,000 เท่าของระเบิดนิวเคลียร์ลูกแรก และประมาณ 4 เท่าของระเบิดนิวเคลียร์ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก ทำให้เกาะหายไปกว่าครึ่ง และเกิดสึนามีเข้าเมืองไทยสมัยนั้น เสียงระเบิดได้ยินถึงกรุงเทพ มีขุนนางเข้าไปทูล ร. 5 ว่ามีข้าศึกบุก แต่ ร. 5 รับสั่งว่าลักษณะเสียงไม่เหมือนปืนใหญ่

ความดังต่างกัน 20 dB หมายความว่าแรงดันอากาศที่กดหูเราต่างกัน 10 เท่าครับ ดังนั้นเสียง 180 dB จะมีแรงกดหูเรา มากกว่าแรงจากเสียง 100 dB (เช่นเครื่องเจาะถนน) = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 10,000 เท่าครับ

มาวิดพื้นกันดีกว่า

ผมรู้สึกว่าตัวเองพึ่งเริ่่มแก่ในปีสองปีที่ผ่านมา (ฮ่า ฮ่า) ทั้งๆที่หน้าแก่+หัวล้านมายี่สิบปีได้แล้ว ปีนี้อายุก็จะย่างเข้าเลขสี่เลยคิดจะสะสมกล้ามเนื้อ และกระดูกไว้ให้เสื่อมเวลาอายุมากขึ้นอีก

ไอ้จะไปเข้ายิมเหมือนตอนอายุยี่สิบต้นๆ ก็เกรงใจภรรยาและลูก เพราะคงไม่พบหน้ากันเพิ่มขึ้นหลายชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์ จะซื้ออุปกรณ์ยิมมาที่บ้าน ก็ไม่มีที่ และคงเปลืองเงินไปปล่าวๆ อย่างที่เคยผ่านมา เลยคิดกลับไปในอดีตว่าออกกำลังแบบไหน ที่เราทำได้ ใช้เวลาน้อย สร้างกล้ามเนื้อไว้เผาผลาญอาหารได้เยอะๆบ้าง ก็พบว่ามีดึงตัวขึ้นบาร์ ซิทอัพ และวิดพื้น

ที่ผ่านมาอาทิตย์ที่แล้วลองไปดึงตัวขึ้นบาร์ในสนามของหมู่บ้าน ปรากฎว่าดึงได้ทีละ 1-3 ครั้งเท่านั้น อายเด็ก และท่าจะไม่รุ่งในอนาคตอันใกล้  ซิทอัพก็ทำได้ไม่เลวนักอยู่แล้ว เลยเหลือวิดพื้นที่จะลอง

เดี๋ยวนี้จะทำอะไรควรจะทำการ research บน Internet ก่อน เลยลองค้นหาคำว่า pushup ดู และไปเจอเว็บ One Hundred Pushups ที่มี training program ในเวลาหกสัปดาห์ โดยที่ผู้ที่ทำน่าจะวิดพื้นได้ 100 ครั้ง อ่านดูแล้วเข้าท่า คล้ายๆวิธีที่เราเคยฝึกตอนเด็กๆ

ก่อนอื่นเราก็ต้องไปทำการทดสอบความพร้อมตัวเองก่อนที่หน้านี้ โดยวิดพื้นด้วยท่าที่ถูกต้อง ให้มากที่สุดเท่าที่เราทำได้ ปากผมก็บอกภรรยาว่าทำได้สิบครั้งก็บุญแล้ว แต่ในใจคิดว่าน่าจะทำได้สักยี่สิบล่ะน่า ปรากฏว่าทำได้ 15 ครั้งเท่านั้น ทำเอาเสียความมั่นใจไปพอควรเพราะเคย peak สุดที่ 50 ครั้งเมื่ออายุยี่สิบกว่าๆ (แต่ตอนนั้นนำ้หนัก 75 กิโล ตอนนี้ เวลาผ่านไป 15 ปี นำ้หนัก 105 กิโลซะแล้ว)

โอเคได้ 15 ก็ 15 ก็ไปดูตารางว่าเราอยู่ระดับไหนก็เห็นว่าเป็นระดับ 3 แบบปริ่มๆ พออ่านว่าคนส่วนใหญ่อยู่ระดับ 2 และ 3 ก็คิดว่า เอาล่ะน่าทำได้คล้ายๆคนอื่นก็ไม่เลวนัก จะได้เริ่มฝึกเสียที

ตารางสัปดาห์ที่ 1 อยู่นี่ ทำสามวันต่อสัปดาห์ มีพักระหว่างวันให้ร่างกายได้ซ่อมตัวเอง ดูๆแล้วเราน่าจะพอทำได้ ไว้ทำสำเร็จจะมา update

สาเหตุที่ผมพล่ามทั้งหมดมานี่ก็เพื่อเพิ่ม cost เวลาผมไม่ยอมทำให้สำเร็จ ถ้าเลิกกลางคัน ผมควรจะอายมากขึ้นเพราะได้บอกชาวบ้านไปแล้ว :-D  ต้องคอยดูว่าจะทำได้ครบไหม

สีลมภัตตาคาร

สีลมภัตตาคารเป็นร้านอาหารเก่าแก่อยู่ในสีลมซอย  15  ครับ อาหารอร่อย ราคาไม่แพง แต่ผมจะไม่รีวิวอะไรเพราะมีผู้รีวิวและถ่ายรูปอาหารได้ดีกว่าผมที่นี่ และที่นี่อยู่แล้ว

วันนี้ไปทานกับสมาชิกสุขนิยม และเห็นป้ายนี้ครับ ทำเอาใจหายเหมือนกัน:

ถามคนในร้านบอกว่าขายประมาณ 120 ล้าน หรือเช่าเดือนละ 4 แสนนะครับ ยังไงน่าจะไปทานก่อนเขาขายตึกได้นะครับ ถ้าเลิกทำคงน่าเสียดาย

เมื่อสิ้นปี 2551 ร้าน Carlton บนถนนสีลม ตรงสถานีรถไฟฟ้าศาลาแดงก็หมดสัญญาเช่าเพราะค่าเช่าขึ้นไปเกือบเท่าตัวเป็นล้านกว่าๆต่อเดือน ก็หมดของอร่อยกินไปที่หนึ่งแล้ว เห็นคนในร้านบอกว่ายังหาที่เช่าไม่ได้

หรือว่า Carlton จะไปเช่าที่สีลมภัตตาคารดี?  ตัวผมอยากให้เปิดทั้งสองแห่งพร้อมๆกันอย่างน้อยจนผมตาย :-)

อย่าใช้ Firefox ยื่นแบบภาษีทางเน็ต

ปีที่แล้วผมยังใช้ Windows XP อยู่และได้ยื่นแบบ ภ.ง.ด. 90 ที่เว็บกรมสรรพากร สำเร็จอย่างน่าประทับใจ

ปีนี้ผมใช้ Mac และใช้ Firefox 3 เข้าไปยื่นแบบอีก ปรากฏว่าพอถึงหน้าที่ให้กรอกเงินปันผลจากบริษัทต่างๆ ผมก็สามารถกรอกข้อมูลได้ แต่พอกดว่าเสร็จ ข้อมูลที่กรอกเข้าไปไม่ถูกใส่ไปในการคำนวณ เนื่องจากหน้าจอปีนี้ต่างจากปีที่แล้ว ผมเลยไม่รู้ว่าถ้าไม่มีปัญหาจะเป็นอย่างไร ผมงงอยู่พักใหญ่ และกลัวว่าผมจะยื่นแบบได้อีกหรือเปล่า

ผมเลยไปหาคอมที่มี Windows XP และใช้ Firefox 3 กรอกข้อมูลอีก ก็มีปัญหาเดิม

ในที่สุดเลยใช้ Internet Explorer บน Windows XP กรอก ปรากฏว่ากรอกผ่านทุกขั้นตอนในที่สุดครับ

ผมเขียนบันทึกไว้เผื่อจะช่วยประหยัดเวลาใครที่จะยื่นแบบผ่านเว็บไซต์ และเผื่อว่าปีหน้าเว็บกรมสรรพากรจะทำงานกับ browser อื่นๆบ้าง

It's sad but true that throughout human history, genocide was used successfully to bring temporary peace to many local tribes, but I don't think it will succeed this time. (I'm in no way advocating genocide--I'm a live-and-let-live kind of guy.)

One Good Reason And Three Bad Reasons To Believe Something

This is one of the most important things to teach a child.

In a nutshell: "Next time somebody tells you something that sounds important, think to yourself: "Is this the kind of thing that people probably know because of evidence? Or is it the kind of thing that people only believe because of tradition, authority, or revelation?" And, next time somebody tells you that something is true, why not say to them: "What kind of evidence is there for that?" And if they can't give you a good answer, I hope you'll think very carefully before you believe a word they say."

Science Magazine's Breakthrough of the Year 2008

Science magazine has a special feature about the scientific breakthrough of the year, along with the runners-up.  The top spot is "reprogramming cells" where scientists turned skin cells into stem cells, ready for differentiation into different types of cells (such as neurons and glia!)

The runners-up are: seeing planets of other stars(!), cataloging cancer genes, finding a new type of high-temperature superconductors, understanding how proteins work, a cheap(er) way to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, making embryo movies, finding a link between muscle and brown fat (but not the white fat), calculating the mass of protons from first principles, and a new gene sequencing technology.

Dimensions: A Beautiful Movie About Math

I'm always on the lookout for educational materials.  Today, I found Dimensions.  It's a two-hours movie with 9 chapters, describing 2-, 3-, and 4-dimensions worlds, complex numbers, and other topics.

It's free, filled with nifty graphics and animations, licensed under a Creative Commons license, can be viewed online, or downloaded with subtitles.

Financial Market ~ Ponzi Scheme?

One of my friends told me long ago that if I were to find the most corrupted industry in the world, investment banking would not be too off the mark.

I didn't understand fully the implication of that statement until today when I read Paul Krugman's simple essay.

So, should we pay extra special attention to ministers who came from investment banking background?

If Programming Languages Were Religions...

I stumbled upon an amusing essay called "If programming languages were religions..."

It's doubly amusing that my programming language of choice (Python) and my life philosophy (Humanism) match in the comparison.

Historically I went through Satanism (Basic) to Judaism (C) to Islam (C++) to Voodoo (Perl) to Humanism (Python.)  I'm also curious about Zen Buddhism (Lisp), Taoism (Haskell), and Hinduism (Erlang) but haven't learned much about them.

Robert L. Glass, a noted software engineer, provides us with a great list of Frequently Forgotten Fundamental Facts about Software Engineering. If your work is related to software production in anyway, you should really take a look. Sometimes people lose sight of the true nature of software development and make tremendously stupid decisions--by being aware of the list, our chance of being a butthead should decrease.

The list was fleshed out into a book called Facts and Fallacies of Software Engineering. I enjoyed the book immensely and you might like it too.

England Cancels Thaksin's and Pojaman's Visas

I don't know the exact reason for the cancellation, but it's heartening to see that money cannot buy everything and justice might prevail after all.

From the news:

...The Supreme Court only found Thaksin guilty in the Ratchadapisek land case late last month, weeks after he fled Thailand during the Beijing Olympics. He fled with his wife, who only days earlier had been found guilty of tax evasion.

England has been under the world community's watchful eyes when Thaksin is concerned. Diplomatic observers have said a decision whether or not to give Thaksin asylum would generate strong ramifications on England's relations with Thailand, as well as London's reputations when democracy, foreign relations and legal principles are concerned.

Another Great Resource For Chemistry Education

I stumbled upon a great channel on YouTube called The Periodic Table of Videos.  The videos are interesting clips about chemical elements and chemistry around us.  I think the channel will be great for my kids when they learn about chemicals.

I stumbled on a fascinating website documenting deaths, injuries, and other damages caused by uncritical belief in many things.

From the site:

This site is designed to make a point about the danger of not thinking critically. Namely that you can easily be injured or killed by neglecting this important skill. We have collected the stories of over 225,000 people who have been injured or killed as a result of someone not thinking critically.

We do this not to make light of their plight. Quite the opposite. We want to honor their memory and learn from their stories.

We also wish to call attention to the types of misinformation which have caused this sort of harm. International Fools: Stupid or Evil?

The fools at The Economist and The Straits Times are at it again.  The writers conveniently forget that the ruling parties of the current Thai government stole the election with vote buying and keep writing that the PAD protesters are against democracy.  If I'm a bit more cynical, I would think they were spoon-fed drivels by Thaksin's PR firms.

I think the people of England and Singapore would also rise up against election stealers in their countries if they can detect the crime.   I don't expect people to be sheep while their basic rights are being trampled by those in power.

Randomness Education For Future Generations

Over the past few years, one of my back-burner projects is learning how to make an automated financial security trader. My trader/economist friend first proposed the idea to me 4 years ago, so I started educating myself about this ever since. I was aware of the demise of Long Term Capital Management, a hedge fund with Nobel laureates on its board, so my gut feeling was that we don't know much about the nature of risks and that the first priority in any automated trading should be: don't get wiped out.  I read quite a few papers but I suspect that the authors might be the "often wrong, never in doubt" types (or at least "often wrong, often in doubt but I won't tell you" type.)

By chance, I stumbled upon two excellent books by Nassim Nicholas Taleb called Fooled by Randomness and The Black Swan.  These books argue that human often impose patterns on to something essentially random and we don't have a good sense about the impact of rare events.  You can see the fall of LTCM and the current financial meltdown as manifestations of the ideas in these books.  I will make sure that my children become exposed to these ideas when they learn about probability and randomness.

Physics For Future Presidents

If you hate physics, chances are, your physics teachers sucked and didn't show you the connection between physical laws and how nature works.  If you still want to give physics a second chance, I highly recommend this website.  (If you already like physics/science in general, I think you will also find the site very entertaining.)

You can read some sample chapters and listen to the podcast.

If you don't know where to start, I suggest this page about "Waves, including UFOs, earthquakes, and music"--you get to learn about Area-51, rescuing pilots in World War II, detecting nuclear explosions, and locating earthquake epicenters. 

You can also buy the popular version of the book (as opposed to the textbook) and have a good overview of basic physics that every responsible citizens should know.  If you are in Thailand, you can find it at Kinokuniya.  I picked mine up at Kinokuniya at Siam Paragon.  I think it's still 20% off.

I learned many things I haven't realized before.  Things like the fact that chocolate chip cookies has 8 times the energy per gram compared to TNT!

"A Colder War" And Its Real-Life Weapon

One of my favorite short stories is Charles Stross' "A Colder War", an alternate history science fiction where Cthulu in H.P. Lovecraft's stories is real and the Cold War is much, much worse than what actually happened in our timeline.

I just found out that XK-PLUTO, the missile in the story described as:

Travelling at Mach 3 the XK-PLUTO will overfly enemy territory, dropping megaton-range bombs until, its payload exhausted, it seeks out and circles a final enemy. Once over the target it will eject its reactor core and rain molten plutonium on the heads of the enemy. XK-PLUTO is a total weapon: every aspect of its design, from the shockwave it creates as it hurtles along at treetop height to the structure of its atomic reactor, is designed to inflict damage...,

is actually a real US military project!

Thailand's Puppet Prime Minister?

In my previous post, I mentioned that Samak Sundaravej was angry when a reporter asked him whether he's Thaksin's puppet.

What's Going On In Thailand?

A few of my English-speaking friends read about the situation in Thailand and asked me about it, so I would like to summarize what's going on in Thailand here for the record.

The problem is the illegitimacy of the current government.

The current government is illegitimate in the following ways:

1.  The Election Commission found evidences of vote buying by the leading party.  This is being filed in the Constitution Court.  What kind of democracy allows vote buying?  If we allow this, we don't really have democracy, do we?

2.  The current government signed a treaty without oversight of the parliament.  This is in violation of the Constitution.  The Constitution Court already found this unconstitutional.  In a more civilized society, leaders would have resigned already.

3.  To avoid being punished for the crimes in 1 and 2, the government is trying to amend the Constitution, in direct violation of the conflict-of-interest clause in the Constitution.

In addition to the above, the government is creating a lot of unnecessary and overpriced megaprojects totaling about US$ 30 billion.  This is likely a way for them to get kickback from the bidders.  Also, the government is appointing a lot of people with murky past to oversee the Central Bank and the SEC.  These people won't be qualified to work in a bank, let alone being bank regulators.

So, basically, how can a civilized society be governed by criminals like this?  Many people won't accept this, so a few hundred thousands of people convened to Bangkok to surround the parliament for 8 days (and counting) to pressure the government to step down.

The demonstration has been going on for over 100 days without any violence.  Yesterday, a few hundred pro-government thugs came in with weapons and there was some fighting.  The thugs were led by many members of the Parliament, from the Prime Minister's party.  About 30 people were injured and one people died.  The Prime Minister declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, trying to disband the demonstration and shutdown media outlets.  Even more people joined in.  Academics unanimously denounced the declaration.  A DA refused to follow the government's order.  The protest continues. Civil disobedience is growing.

Personally, I don't think the government can suppress the demonstration.  It's blatantly obvious that the country is being run by thugs and corrupted people and people won't stand for it anymore.  

By the way, the Prime Minister is the leader of the party financed by Thaksin Shinawatra, the former PM who is currently running from corruption charges in England.  The current PM even admitted it himself that he is a nominee of Thaksin's before the election.  Yesterday he was angry that a CNN reporter asked him about this.

P.S.  Samak Sundaravej, the current PM, pulled this trick once before.  In 1976, he instigated violence against student protesters, leading to Thailand's 1976 Massacre.  He is appealing a two-year sentence he got for slander.  He is also being charged with corruption for the unusual deal he made for fire trucks during his term as Bangkok's governor.
