CorruptionWatch.net: Thailand's Corruption Info

CorruptionWatch.net:

Globalization & modernization

Software Horror Stories To Keep Programmers Humble

When I was young, I thought sofware was easy, my programs would contain no bug, and I would finish them quickly.

I was an arrogant fool.

Now that I'm no longer young and very slightly less foolish, I expect the worst when I write any piece of code. Now, I try to always program defensively, trying to eliminate the chance that a bug will occur. I think about preconditions, postconditions, and invariants. Alway ask myself how I know the code is correct. Test a lot. Think things through before coding. Remember that shortcuts rarely are short but almost always cut.

I consider myself fortunate that when my software failed, nobody died.

Others were not so fortunate.

This Software Horror Stories page shows us what disasters did happen when software failed. People who made these softwares were probably quite smart and experienced. They knew how well their software must perform. They knew what the stakes were. Yet they failed. Spectacularly.

Younglings, it's better to learn from others' mistakes. There are some good free tips. There are a lot of great books. I can recommend three: Code Complete, The Mythical Man-Month, and Facts and Fallacies in Software Engineering.

The most important thing is to start with the will to make good software, work at it a lot, work at it constantly until it's a habit.

Kind of like dieting.

Corruption Index: Thailand Government Is 56th Most Corrupted Out Of 130 Countries Surveyed

Thailand's score is 6.7 where 0 is the least corrupted and 10 is the most corrupted.

(DEFINITION: Relates to perceptions of the degree of corruption as seen by business people, academics and risk analysts, and ranges between 0 (highly clean) and 10 (highly corrupt). Includes police corruption, business corruption, political corruption, etc. Data for 2003.)

The most corrupted countries are:

#1 Bangladesh
#2 Nigeria
#3 Haiti
#4 Burma
#5 Paraguay
#6 Azerbaijan
#7 Cameroon
#8 Tajikistan
#9 Angola
#10 Georgia

The least corrupted countries are (#130 = least corrupted):

#130 Finland
#129 Iceland
#128 Denmark
#127 New Zealand
#126 Singapore
#125 Sweden
#124 Netherlands
#123 Norway
#122 Australia
#121 Switzerland

China (#63) is rated to be less corrupted than Thailand, contrary to most Thai's perception.

Cry, my beloved country. The wheel of Karma is turning way too slowly.

(On the other hand, there is a talk about re-instituting Khun Ying Jaruvan Maintaka to her office to fight the rampant corruption in Thailand again. I will believe it when I see it done.)

By the way, do you know that when Thai government is signing the FTA (Free Trade Agreements) with various countries, the agreements are not reviewed by the paliament? This stinks like Enron or Worldcom situations. Power without accountability does poison the human mind.

Anyway, my 92-year old grandma insists that Karma exists and the wicked will be punished. I say it better works before the wicked die because if the wheel of Karma requires reincarnation, it would be effectively as if there is no Karma at all, since nobody remembers their past lives anyway. (I personally believe that when I die, "I" will just ceast to exist and my former body will be either dust, ash, animals', plants', bacteria's food, or combination of the above. That's why I need to see bad deeds punished before the perpetrators die.)

Another Site Of Well-Designed Products

I linked to a site that exhibits clever/well-designed stuffs before.

Here is another such site. It's by Don Norman, the author of an interesting book called "The Design of Everyday Things". There are many interesting essays by Professor Norman that you can read at the site too.

Professor Norman is a cognitive scientist who does not bullshit, thus having quite valuable insight into how human-product interaction should work. In my experience, people with good psychology training (who do not bullshit) tend to be better than most people at writing specifications for software systems.

BTW, my partner MindFireInc's flagship product, LookWho'sClicking, is designed by my amazing friend Matt who is also a straight-talking psychologist. So far, the customers are quite happy with how they interact with the software. We are also doing improvements that will make customers even happier in 2006. If you do any marketing via the Internet at all, you should check them out.

Very, Very Short Stories

There is an annual competition for fictions that use no more than 55 words.

The rule for entering the contest can be found here.

A few of of current winners I like are:

SAY SOMETHING

The subway lurched, throwing her into his arms.

He’s strong, protective, loving, she thought. We’ll marry at a seaside resort and have four beautiful children.

He lifted her up and smiled. I’ll always be faithful. When we’re old, we’ll travel the world together.

The train slowed. She moved to the door.

"Thanks."

"Don’t mention it."

A PARTY FOR INNOCENCE

Persuasion enticed her there. Music played. Harmony danced with Rhythm. Charm brushed a hand across her cheek, attracting Desire.

She thought she heard Sincerity; it was Seduction. He introduced Lust. Party over, the guest list lay forgotten like her.

She read that Love had declined to attend.

Honor had not been invited.

Innocence is gone.

INSIDE OUT

They had known each other a few years.

She was nice. He knew she liked him.

But she was just average-looking. He couldn’t settle for that.

One weekend, she asked him to the movies. She was intelligent, funny, easy to be with.

After four months of dating, she became a stunning beauty.

And my favorite:

AT THE AUTOPSY

"Victim’s blood is completely drained, apparently through two small puncture wounds in the neck," said the coroner.

"Hey … you don’t suppose it’s, you know, the real deal?" asked his assistant.

"No, just some psycho."

"You sure?"

They stared at each other for a moment, then burst out laughing–but stopped when the corpse laughed, too.
